Anti-Cheat Checklist: How to Vet a Private Server Before You Play
A practical checklist for judging a Metin2 private server before you install anything: signs of good administration, safe client downloads, account security habits and clear red flags.
Key points
- A well-run server publishes clear rules, a staffed support channel and transparent changelogs.
- Download clients only from the server's official site, and scan files before running them; you do so at your own risk.
- Use a unique password for every server and never share it with anyone, including staff.
- Be wary of aggressive pay-to-win and of any server that encourages real-money trading.
Private servers change rates, items and quests. Treat specifics here as general guidance and confirm them on your server's own wiki.
Private servers are run by volunteers and small teams, and quality varies a great deal. Some are carefully maintained for years, while others disappear after a few weeks or cause real trouble for their players. A little vetting before you create an account protects your time, your computer and your personal data. Use this checklist as a starting point, and remember that no checklist is a guarantee.
Signs of a well-run server
Good administration tends to leave visible traces. Look for these before you commit:
- Written rules that cover cheating, botting, scamming and harassment, and that explain the consequences.
- Active communication through a news page, forum or community chat, with announcements that explain changes rather than hide them.
- A support route where players can report bugs, cheaters and account problems and receive replies.
- Changelogs and a wiki so you can see what the server changed from the original game and why.
- Consistent staff behavior. Administrators who play by the same rules as everyone else build trust.
Visible enforcement matters as well. Servers that discuss how they handle cheaters, even in general terms, usually take fairness seriously. Servers that say nothing at all about it are worth a second look.
Client download safety
The game client is the most common route for malware, so treat it with care. Metin247 does not host game clients or downloads of any kind. Here is how to reduce your risk if you decide to play somewhere:
- Use only the official site of the server. Be suspicious of mirrors, video descriptions and forum links from strangers.
- Check the address carefully. Fake sites often copy a server's name with small spelling changes.
- Scan the file with an up-to-date antivirus before opening it, and consider using a separate or virtual machine environment if you are unsure.
- Be wary of extra programs. A client should not ask you to disable your security software or install unrelated tools.
- Download at your own risk. We cannot verify any server's files, and neither can a directory listing.
Account security habits
Your account is only as safe as your habits. Follow these basics:
- Use a password you do not use anywhere else, ideally from a password manager.
- Never share your password or login code with anyone, even someone claiming to be staff. Real administrators do not need it.
- Use a separate email address for gaming if you can.
- Enable any extra protection the server offers, such as storage or item locks, if it exists.
- Do not click login links sent in private messages. Type the server address yourself.
Red flags to watch for
Walk away, or at least slow down, if you notice any of these:
- No rules, no staff names and no way to contact anyone.
- Promises that sound impossible, such as everything free forever, guaranteed top rank or no cheaters at all.
- Pressure to download quickly or to disable security tools.
- Requests for your password, payment details or personal documents.
- Staff who encourage or ignore botting, exploiting or scams.
- A history of sudden resets, vanished databases or constant unexplained downtime reported by the community.
Pay-to-win and real-money trading
Many private servers fund themselves through donations or an item shop. That is not automatically bad, but the details matter. Ask yourself whether paying players gain a decisive advantage in fights, whether free players can still progress at a reasonable pace, and whether the shop rules are clearly explained. A server that sells overwhelming power while hiding what it offers deserves caution.
Real-money trading, meaning the exchange of in-game items or accounts for real money between players, is a separate issue. It is a major source of scams, stolen accounts and chargebacks, and many servers ban it. We do not encourage it. If a server openly promotes it, treat that as a warning sign. Likewise, avoid any tool or service that promises to bypass anti-cheat protections; that route leads to bans and malware.
A short pre-play checklist
- Read the rules and the privacy policy, if one exists.
- Search for community discussions on independent forums, and read both praise and complaints.
- Start with a throwaway account and a fresh password.
- Spend nothing until you have played for a while.
- Report cheaters through the server's own channels.
