Outlanderā€˜s eighth and final season has officially concluded, but is it really theĀ endĀ for Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), the couple at the center of this TV adaptation ofĀ Diana Gabaldonā€˜s novels?Ā Warning: Spoilers for theĀ OutlanderĀ Series FinaleĀ ahead!

The show’s closing episode, ā€œAnd the World Was All Around Us,ā€ saw Jamie and Claire gasp themselves awake, seemingly from the dead, after he was shot on the battlefield at Kings Mountain. The cliffhanger conclusion may be setting fans up to imagine their own interpretations, but there is more than one way a movie continuation ofĀ OutlanderĀ is possible following the finale episode.

While we wouldn’t imagine the show returning for several episodes, the door was definitely left open for a continuation in a potential movie. Below, we’re breaking down a few of the points that serve as a welcome jumping-off point.

Are Jamie and Claire dead or alive?

Starz

While the implication is that Jamie and Claire survived the series by opening their eyes in the final seconds before the post-credit sequence featuring a Diana Gabaldon cameo, a follow-up film would answer the lingering question. Hopefully, it would make room for an explanation behind their survival, as we’ve only brushed upon Claire’s healing powers in the show, without explicitly diving into the true nature of it.

Brianna’s Baby Isn’t a Time Traveler

Plucked from the pages of Gabaldon’s books, it’s revealed in the finale that Brianna’s (Sophie Skelton) new baby, Davy, doesn’t have the time-traveling gene. This feels like a major revelation to drop in the show’s final moments, and the potential setup for conflict is strong as Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin) have traveled back and forth between the past and present most often, including with their first two children. Will Davy keep them anchored to the past as Claire implied? It’s something we’d be eager to learn more about in a potential follow-up film.

Another Book Looms on the Horizon

Gabaldon’sĀ OutlanderĀ book series has yet to conclude, and so, there’s a whole other novel’s worth of tales to pursue if the show returns for a movie. The yet-to-be-releasedĀ A Blessing for a Warrior Going OutĀ is Gabaldon’s tenth novel in the main series. Needless to say, we’d happily continue to explore Jamie and Claire’s lives onscreen if there’s material to pull from.

Blood of My BloodĀ Crossover

While the show’s creatives and Gabaldon have noted the separation betweenĀ OutlanderĀ and its TV prequel seriesĀ Outlander: Blood of My Blood, little easter eggs in the newest series have built up some exciting threads for crossover opportunities, including the introduction of a brother Claire never knew she had. Is it possible they’ve crossed paths and just didn’t know, or could a movie bridge the gap between these two stories? We certainly wouldn’t mind it!

The Happy Ending

In the world ofĀ Outlander, a happy ending may be rare amid war and other challenges from the 18th century, but surely if Jamie and Claire are indeed alive, we’d prefer to see their happy ending at length, rather than a mere breath at the end of the final episode. After they built the family they have, what better way to conclude the show’s run, than with a movie that brings them all together, one last time, sans the threat of an impending battle…
