Part 4 (Ending)

Three years later.

I’m eleven now. Eli and Owen are energetic three-year-olds who call Marcus “Papa” and chase me around the garden laughing.

We visit my parents’ graves every month. I tell them how I kept their babies alive. How we made it.

Uncle Ray and Diane got long prison sentences. The money they stole was returned to our trust. We don’t touch most of it — Marcus says it will pay for our futures when we’re older. For now, we live simply and happily.

Every night, Marcus tucks the boys in, then comes to my room. He kisses my forehead and says the same thing:

“You saved them, Lily. And in doing so, you saved yourself too. Your parents would be so proud.”

I no longer sleep on a thin mat in the laundry room.

I sleep in a real bed, with a nightlight shaped like a star, knowing that the family I fought for is finally safe.

Sometimes the worst betrayals come from the people who are supposed to love you. But sometimes, when you least expect it, a stranger in a navy suit becomes the father you needed all along.

The End.
