Jenna had been having an affair with Mark for over a year. She wanted him to leave me. When he kept stalling, she suggested “scaring” me by making Ava sick — just enough to force me to stay home and need him more. Mark agreed. They planned to give Ava something to cause vomiting and dehydration.
But they gave her too much. And Ava’s little body couldn’t handle it.
Mark tried to pin everything on Jenna. She turned on him in return. Both of them were arrested.
The court case was brutal. I sat in the front row every single day, holding Ava’s stuffed bunny. The videos played on the big screen for everyone to see. Mark cried. Jenna cried. None of it mattered.
Mark was sentenced to 25 years. Jenna got 18.
I sold the house. Left the city. Started a small foundation in Ava’s name to help daycare safety and single mothers who lost children.
Some nights I still hear her laugh in my dreams.
