The release of a security video has become a decisive turning point in the murder case of Carolina Flores, a former beauty queen and model from Ensenada, Baja California. The footage confirms that the 27-year-old woman was killed on April 15 inside her apartment in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City, allegedly by her mother-in-law, Érika María Herrera Coriant, 63 years old.
The approximately 45-second video, recorded by the apartment’s living room camera, shows Carolina, wearing pajamas and slippers, walking across the room while her mother in law is already standing there. The two exchange brief, inaudible words before heading toward the kitchen. Seconds later, a gunshot is heard, followed by screams and five more shots
Érika María then calmly exits the kitchen and encounters her son, Alejandro Sánchez, Carolina’s husband, who is holding their eight-month-old baby. “What did you do, Mom?” he asks. She replies, “Nothing, she made me angry.” After Alejandro looks inside and sees his wife’s body, he says, “She is my family.” His mother responds, “She is my family too. You were mine, she stole you from me.” The video ends at that moment.
The case has generated intense controversy. According to the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, the official complaint was filed on April 16, one day after the killing, by Carolina’s husband himself, who directly accused his mother. However, authorities have not explained why the crime was not reported immediately or why Alejandro has not been detained or formally investigated as a suspect.
Unofficial accounts claim that neighbors heard the gunshots on the night of April 15 and found Alejandro in shock, sitting in the living room with the baby in his arms. Another line of investigation suggests that he may have waited more than an hour before contacting authorities, allegedly allowing his mother to leave the scene.
Carolina’s mother, Reyna Gómez, told Univision that her son in law informed her of the murder only the following day, stating that his own mother had shot Carolina.

The leak of the video has intensified public outrage, not only because of the brutality of the crime but also due to the absence of arrests more than a week later. Under mounting social pressure, the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office announced that the case, initially classified as intentional homicide, is now being investigated under the femicide protocol.
