PART 3 (THE TWIST)
The car stopped under an abandoned overpass.
Rain softened to a whisper.
Lucy killed the engine.
For a moment—
neither of them moved.
Then she reached into her pocket.
Pulled out a small device.
Pressed play.
Voices filled the car.
Raul.
Valerie.
Others.
“…after Herrera’s gone, we clean house,” Raul said.
“No loose ends.”
Another voice.
Calm.
Cold.
“Even the girl?”
A pause.
“Yes,” Raul replied.
“She knows too much.”
Diego turned slowly.
Lucy stared straight ahead.
“They were going to kill you,” he said.
“They were going to kill me,” she corrected.
Silence.
“Who are you?” he asked.
She finally looked at him.
“My father worked for you,” she said.
“Ten years ago.”
Something flickered in Diego’s memory.
“A warehouse fire,” she continued.
“You signed off on it.”
His jaw tightened.
“It was business.”
She nodded slowly.
“That fire killed him.”
The air changed.
So this was it.
Not coincidence.
Not loyalty.
Revenge.
“And yet…” Diego said quietly,
“you saved me.”
Lucy’s eyes didn’t soften.
“I didn’t save you,” she said.
“I stopped them.”
A beat.
“Because no one gets to take what’s mine.”
Diego frowned.
“What’s yours?”
She leaned closer.
Voice low.
Dangerous.
“Your empire.”
Silence hit like a gunshot.
Outside, the storm began to fade.
Inside the car—
something new was being born.
Not trust.
Not alliance.
Something far more dangerous.
A war.

PART 3 The call came less than an hour later. Not from my father.
