Athena Strand was only 7 years old when she was kidnapped from her Texas home and found dead two days later.
The young girl was reported missing by her stepmother on Nov. 30, 2022. Shortly after, former FedEx driver Tanner Horner — who was delivering packages in her neighborhood at the time of the disappearance — reportedly told police that he panicked after striking Strand with his van while delivering Christmas packages to her home, and ultimately killed her.
Horner was arrested and charged with capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in early December 2022, just a few days after Strand had gone missing. Shortly after, her mother, Maitlyn Gandy, spoke at a press conference and shared that the FedEx driver had just delivered a set of Barbie dolls from the “You Can Be Anything” collection to her home in Wise County, Texas, before allegedly abducting her.
“Athena was robbed of the opportunity to be anything she wanted to be. And this present, ordered out of innocence and love is one she will never receive,” Gandy told reporters, per CBS News. “I was robbed of watching [Athena] grow up by a man that everyone was supposed to be able to trust to do just one simple task: deliver a Christmas present and leave.”
Over three years later, Horner appeared in court on April 7 and pled guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with Strand’s death, per CBS News and CNN.
So, what happened to Athena Strand? Here’s everything to know about her kidnapping and killing allegedly at the hands of former FedEx driver Tanner Horner.
Strand was killed in November 2022

A few days after being reported missing, Strand was found dead in an area near a river about nine miles from her home in early December 2022. Per the affidavit, Horner allegedly helped lead authorities to the location.
Strand had been staying with her father and stepmother at the time of her alleged killing. She reportedly got into an argument with her stepmother, Elizabeth “Ashley” Strand, who later went to look for Strand.
Ashley told authorities that she wasn’t aware Strand had gone outside, most likely to go to her makeshift bedroom. Per the affidavit, Strand and her stepsister were reportedly sleeping in a converted storage shed next to the house while the home was undergoing construction.
Horner claimed he put Strand in his FedEx van after accidentally hitting her with his vehicle
Horner was a contract delivery driver for Topspin, which delivered packages for FedEx, and had just delivered a package to Strand’s Texas home when he saw her in the driveway.
After being accused of kidnapping and killing Strand, Horner claimed that he had put the young girl in his van after accidentally hitting her with his van while backing up the vehicle, according to an arrest affidavit reviewed by PEOPLE. He allegedly told investigators that the child wasn’t seriously injured after he struck her, as she was speaking and told him her name.
Per the affidavit, he then allegedly told police that he killed the child inside his van after panicking about what to do next, telling investigators that he was afraid she would tell her father he’d hit her with the truck.
Horner allegedly told authorities that he tried to break Strand’s neck, but when that didn’t work, he opted to strangle her in the back of the van “with his bare hands,” the affidavit states.
However, during the trial, the jury was shown an image that showed Strand still awake and active while riding in the back of Horner’s FedEx truck on her knees, per the Associated Press.
Horner was charged with kidnapping and capital murder
A few days after Strand’s alleged killing, Horner was charged with capital murder and kidnapping. According to The New York Times, Wise County sheriff Lane Akin said that Horner confessed to killing the young girl, whom authorities believed had been killed within an hour of being abducted.
Jail records previously reviewed by PEOPLE showed that he was additionally charged with three counts of sexual assault of a child, though it’s unclear if Strand was a target.
According to Fox4News, Strand had been naked when she was found, and prosecutors indicated that there was DNA evidence of sexual assault.
When Horner was indicted on the charges of aggravated kidnapping and capital murder on Feb. 16, 2023, he initially pleaded not guilty.

Strand’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against FedEx and Topspin
In December 2022, the same month that Horner was charged, Strand’s father filed a lawsuit against Horner, FedEx and the contractor who hired him, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. Per the outlet, he claimed that FedEx holds “significant control” over employees and contractors who deliver packages, and the lawsuit states that FedEx and Big Topspin were negligent and failed to properly investigate Horner’s past.
A few months later, Strand’s mother joined the lawsuit, seeking “fair and reasonable” compensation for “acts and omissions” that led to her daughter’s murder, per CBS News.
“This lawsuit is about Athena Strand – a vibrant young girl who deserves to have her memory live on for the good she brought to the world,” the lawsuit states. “It is about a life that was taken senselessly – a child who could have been any of ours. It is about a loss that could have and should have been prevented.”
A FedEx spokesperson responded to the lawsuits via a statement shared with PEOPLE, saying, “Our thoughts remain with the family of Athena Strand in the wake of this tragedy. We are aware of the complaint filed against FedEx Ground.”
It is unclear if the lawsuits have been resolved.
Where is Tanner Horner now?
On April 7, Horner pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with Strand’s 2022 death.
During opening statements, Wise County District Attorney James Stainton said that the “only truthful thing that Tanner Horner told law enforcement was that he killed her,” per CNN and CBS News.
“The pattern and web of lies that he put together, it’s going to be hard for ya’ll to keep up with. It is lie upon lie upon lie upon lie,” Stainton continued. Per the Associated Press, he also claimed that the “first thing” he told Strand after picking her up and putting her in his truck was, “Don’t scream or I’ll hurt you.”

Meanwhile, Horner’s attorney, Steven Goble, told the jury that Horner has autism and also suffered from “various mental illnesses throughout his life,” a result of his mother allegedly drinking while pregnant, per the Associated Press. Goble also reportedly claimed that the former FedEx worker was exposed to a “massive amount of lead.”
Now, jurors will decide whether the former FedEx driver will face the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison. According to the Associated Press, Goble asked jurors to sentence him to life in prison.
