What began as a memorial for little Maya Mitchell quickly turned into one of the most heartbreaking moments the River Oaks community has ever witnessed.
Students, teachers, and grieving parents gathered at River Oaks Elementary to say goodbye to the sweet 8-year-old whose life was tragically cut short in the devastating Mitchell family case.
But according to those inside the school gymnasium… nothing prepared them for the emotional tribute that came near the end of the ceremony.
One small detail connected to Maya reportedly caused the entire room to break down crying at once.
Even teachers who had worked there for decades said they had never seen pain like this before.
And as photos of Maya smiling in her school uniform played across the screen, the horrifying reality of what was stolen from this innocent little girl became impossible to ignore.
Matthew was found dead alongside his pregnant wife Thy Mitchell, 39, and their two young children, aged eight and four, in their $1.2 million home.
Authorities said Matthew is the suspect in the deaths, and said all victims died from gunshot wounds.
The couple owned the restaurant Traveler’s Table in Houston, and Matthew was previously CEO of the Texas Center for Drug Development, according to his website biography.
A publicist for the family’s restaurant referred to Thy as a ‘dear friend’ to the Daily Mail, and said the family would not be releasing a statement as the investigation continues.
Houston Police Department said they were called to the address shortly after 5:26pm on Monday night for a welfare check.
Police said it was a babysitter and a relative of one of the parents who alerted officers after not hearing from the family for over a day.

The children had last been seen on Sunday, and had been found dead in their beds, reports Fox26.
Authorities said they were treating the tragedy as a murder-suicide, but have not released any further details about the crime scene.
The River Oaks community is among the most affluent in Houston, where multi-million dollar homes line the streets.
A neighbor named Cindy told Click2 that she has lived in the neighborhood for 19 years, and had ‘never seen anything like this.’
‘We haven’t had these kinds of tragedies. We don’t have robberies,’ she said. ‘I shake for the little kids.’

According to his biography on his restaurant’s website, Matthew Mitchell studied in France, Italy, and at Oxford University in England, and early in his career he worked as a journalist in London and New York City.
When he returned to Texas, he attended Rice University, and entered the pharmaceutical industry, eventually becoming the President and CEO of the Texas Center for Drug Development, Inc., a clinical research company.
He went on to open Traveler’s Table with his wife Thy – a restaurateur and board member of the Texas Restaurant Association.
In September 2025, the couple were named Restaurateurs Of The Year in Houston.
