Nestled among the pine-covered hills of Jalisco state, the luxurious villa that once served as the last refuge of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, nicknamed “El Mencho,” has been revealed following a large-scale raid by the Mexican military.

The villa is located within the Tapalpa Country Club gated community – an upscale resort complex featuring weekend villas, a golf course, and secluded ecological spaces. Outwardly, the house resembles a typical resort villa with stone walls, a red tiled roof, and spacious grounds overlooking meticulously manicured lawns.

According to Mexican authorities, this was the secret hideout of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) – one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the country. The clue that led authorities to the villa came from monitoring Oseguera’s lover.

The raid took place in the woods behind the house on February 23, bringing to an end years of hiding for the notorious drug lord.

Images published by Reuters show the villa’s interior, which is modern, spacious, and features many large windows opening onto nature.

The kitchen still bore the marks of daily life: takeout food containers, spice bottles, milk, drinks, and uncleaned food items. Some vegetables and food were scattered on the floor, suggesting the owner had left in a hurry.

In the bedroom, clothes are neatly arranged. Perfume, cosmetics, and personal items are placed on the shelves. Several drawers contain medications for headaches, insomnia, acid reflux, and fungal infections, along with health and beauty products.

Investigators also discovered drawers filled with medications and products for various health problems, from migraines and insomnia to acid reflux and fungal infections, alongside a facial massage roller. There was also a piece of cloth bearing the logo of Mayorquin – a high-end jewelry store in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state.

In the freezer, bottles of Tationil Plus, an antioxidant advertised to help protect cells, sit next to a dosage instruction sheet.

On the dining table sat a small box tied with a bright red ribbon.

A noteworthy detail is the Catholic altar located in the common area. Here, there is a small statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, along with Saint Jude Thaddaeus, considered an example of faith in desperate circumstances.

Alongside the religious statues are handwritten passages from the Bible, reflecting Oseguera’s personal religious life that coexisted with his notorious criminal past.

Outside the residential area, the remnants of the military operation are still evident. Numerous burnt-out cars and trucks lie scattered around the area following the Mexican army’s siege.

According to authorities, “El Mencho” attempted to flee through the garden behind the villa and climbed a nearby hillside to escape. He was shot during the pursuit and died while being airlifted to the hospital.

Tapalpa is known as a peaceful ecotourism destination with lush pine forests, a cool climate, and agave fields used for tequila production.

However, the area once attracted international attention when the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on several local businesses, due to allegations of involvement in money laundering for the CJNG and the gang’s Los Cuinis financial network.
