The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of US television presenter Savannah Guthrie, has taken a new turn after authorities withdrew an earlier request for neighbourhood surveillance footage. Officials in Tucson, Arizona said they were no longer focusing on footage from 11 January, a date previously highlighted as potentially significant in the case.
Guthrie, 84, has been missing since February 1, when investigators believe she may have been taken from her home.
Investigators are examining DNA samples collected from Nancy’s home and nearby areas. They hope this evidence can lead to identifying the suspect, although initial analyses have not matched any profiles in the national database. Authorities are considering using investigative genetic genealogy to aid in this process.
Earlier in the inquiry, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department had urged residents to review security recordings from as far back as mid-January, suggesting a possible suspect could have been in the area weeks before her disappearance.
That appeal centred on an image captured by a Nest doorbell camera, which was thought to show an individual near the property. Authorities had asked for footage recorded between specific time windows on 11 January and 31 January.
However, Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators later reconsidered the relevance of that date after questions arose over the accuracy of the image’s timestamp.
According to US media reports, detectives had contacted Google, which owns the Nest system, to verify the timing of the footage. While the company initially suggested the image may have been recorded on 11 January, it later indicated the timestamp could not be confirmed.
As a result, authorities withdrew their request for footage from that date, citing uncertainty over whether it was connected to the case.
Investigators are continuing to examine other evidence, including previously released video showing a masked individual tampering with a doorbell camera outside Guthrie’s home in the early hours of 1 February.
Officials have said the person seen in that footage may have visited the property before the day of her disappearance, but no confirmed leads have emerged from earlier appeals for information.
The case remains under active investigation, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
