Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators believe they know why the suspect abducted Guthrie but wouldn’t give further details.
The DNA on gloves found near Nancy Guthrie’s home has been tied to a person who is not a suspect in her disappearance, officials said.
PHOENIX — Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said he believes Nancy Guthrie was targeted and that the suspect could “absolutely” strike again.
Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her home outside of Tucson on Jan. 31 and was reported missing the next day. Authorities believe she was kidnapped, abducted or otherwise taken against her will.
Nanos, in an interview with NBC News, said investigators believe they know why Guthrie was targeted but wouldn’t give details.
“We believe we know why he did this, and we believe that it was targeted, but we, we can’t, we’re not 100% sure of that,” Nanos said in the interview. “So it’d be silly to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry about it. You’re, you’re not his target.’ Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No, keep your wits about you.”
Nanos told NBC News he’s intentionally withholding their theory and other details in the case, citing the integrity of the investigation.
