A former FBI agent has provided a new perspective on a crucial element in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, indicating there could be a straightforward reason why the 84-year-old may have left her door open the evening she went missing.

Nancy, the mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, has been unaccounted for for more than six weeks after vanishing from her Tucson, Arizona, residence. The case continues to baffle investigators, despite a comprehensive probe conducted by the FBI and local law enforcement.

On the Brian Entin Investigates podcast, former FBI special agent Maureen O’Connell offered her expert analysis of Nancy’s case, drawing on her extensive career experience. It comes after a mystery man who claimed he “saw Nancy 5 days ago” offered chilling new proof.

Addressing the possibility that Nancy’s door was left ajar, O’Connell noted that in hotter regions, it’s fairly common for residents to depend on reinforced security doors that permit ventilation whilst providing safety.

“If it’s hot out, but you want to leave the door open all night… a lot of people don’t have air conditioning and don’t want it,” she explained. She detailed how these doors are usually constructed with robust metal mesh, preventing anyone from reaching through or gaining simple entry, even when the primary door remains open.

According to O’Connell, such features are commonly found in places like California, where homeowners frequently prioritize airflow, especially on warm evenings. Even in peaceful neighborhoods, these security doors are considered a sensible option for maintaining comfort whilst ensuring safety, reports the Irish Star.

“So, you can leave that door wide open… and still feel secure,” O’Connell told Entin. Speaking from personal experience, she noted that residents typically feel comfortable using multiple locks alongside these doors. She said, “I used to have one and I would leave that door open at night because I had two dead bolts and the door knob locked.”

Her insights indicate that if Nancy had a comparable arrangement, an open door might have been standard practice rather than anything out of the ordinary. Authorities have continued working to reconstruct Nancy’s activities after she arrived home from a family meal the evening before her disappearance.

Investigators have examined available surveillance footage and pursued tens of thousands of leads, though no suspect has been named. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office has appealed for anyone with relevant information to step forward as the investigation proceeds.

The development follows a significant turn in the case after a 911 caller reported a ‘woman hanging out of car screaming.’
