GoFundMe raises more than $100,000 for family of youngest US soldier killed in Iran war

More than $100,000 has poured into an online fundraiser for the family of Sgt. Declan J. Coady, the youngest U.S. service member killed so far in the war with Iran, after he died in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait this week.

The GoFundMe campaign, titled “Support for the Coady Family After Declan’s Loss,” was created by family friend Marianne Crandall to help cover funeral, travel and memorial expenses following the 20-year-old Army Reserve soldier’s death on March 1 at the Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait, where he was supporting Operation Epic Fury. As of Thursday, the appeal had surpassed $100,000 from more than 1,500 donors.

Coady, of West Des Moines, Iowa, was among six American soldiers killed when an Iranian one-way attack drone hit their tactical operations center in the opening days of the conflict, according to the Department of War. He was two months shy of his 21st birthday and had recently been promoted posthumously from specialist to sergeant, relatives said.

“Declan was more than a soldier — he was a son, a family member, a friend, and a light in the lives of those who knew him,” Crandall wrote on the fundraising page. His family described him as “smart and kind” and “a rock in all of our lives” in a separate statement.

Crandall wrote that the outpouring of donations shows the Coady family is not alone as they navigate “this heartbreaking time,” and urged supporters who cannot give money to share the page and keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
