Kenna Cohen shared an emotional tribute after her boyfriend, 20-year-old University of Alabama student James Paul Gracey, died during a Spring Break trip to Barcelona.
She posted photos of them together and wrote that she felt grateful for the time they shared. She described him as kind, devoted, and selfless. She said she wished she could turn back time but felt thankful for the last six months of his life with her.
James Gracey disappeared after leaving Shoko nightclub around 3 AM. He got separated from his friends and did not return to their Airbnb. Witnesses later reported seeing him walking toward the rocky coastline, which suggests he may have fallen into the sea. His wallet was found floating nearby, raising concerns about his fate.
Cohen asked people to pray for Gracey’s family and keep his memory alive. Her message spread widely across social media platforms. The two had dated for six months. She studies at the University of Georgia and grew up in Atlanta. Gracey studied at the University of Alabama and was set to graduate next year.
Investigation Details
Police said a video footage shows Gracey walking alone near the dock area at Port Olimpic before he fell into the water. He had spent the night at Shoko nightclub, a popular venue near the sea. He left the club around 3 a.m. and did not return to his accommodation.
His family reported him missing soon after. Search teams began looking along the nearby beach. Divers first found his wallet floating in the sea. They later recovered his body from about 13 feet of water in the same area.
Police also got his phone from a pickpocket who claimed to have found it. Officials said they could not confirm if it was lost or stolen before the fall.
Who Was James Gracey?
Gracey, 20, came from Elmhurst, Illinois and had travelled to Spain for Spring Break to visit friends. He had gone on a boys’ trip to meet fraternity members studying abroad. He was last seen near the beachfront before he went missing.
Police first looked into the possibility of foul play but later said the case points to an accident. An autopsy at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Catalonia will determine the exact cause of death.
Gracey played ice hockey, and local teams paid tribute after his death. His family said they are heartbroken and asked for privacy as they deal with the loss. Tammy Duckworth also shared condolences and called the loss devastating.
