Jason Hughesβ widow said the family supports dropping the charges against the students to prevent βa separate tragedy from occurring.β
AGeorgia teacher was killed in a high school prank gone wrong just days after the school district issued a warning about the stunts.
Jason Hughes, 40, died the night of March 6 after a group of students came to his Gainesville, home and βrolledβ his trees with toilet paper, according to a release from the Hall County Sheriffβs Office provided toΒ Oxygen.com.
After Hughesβa beloved teacher at North Hall High Schoolβcame out of his house, the students got into two vehicles to drive away. Hughes was killed after he tripped and fell into the road and was run over by a pickup truck allegedly being driven by 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace, authorities said.
Wallace and the other students stopped to help Hughes, providing him with aid until emergency responders arrived, but the father died from his injuries at a local hospital.
Wallace was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving, the sheriffβs office said. Four others including Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Huks, Ana Katherine Luque and Ariana Cruz, all 18, were also arrested and charged with criminal trespass and littering on private property.

School District Issues Warning Days Before Jason Hughesβ Death
Just three days before Hughesβ death, the Hall County School District hadΒ issued a warningΒ to parents and students, cautioning them of the dangers of pranks that βhave gone too farβ and the βserious consequencesβ or criminal charges that could result in βdestructive behavior.β
βWe urge all students to refrain from participating in any activities that may cause harm or destruction to school or personal property,β they noted. βSuch actions not only reflect poorly on the individual involved but also tarnish the reputation of our schools, families, and community.β
In a statement toΒ Oxygen.com, the Hall County School District expressed their condolences to Hughesβ family.
βOur hearts are broken. Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father; a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues,β the district wrote. βHe gave so much to so many in numerous ways as he faithfully served God. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family.β
Jason Hughesβ Wife Pleads For Charges to Be Dropped
In the aftermath of Hughesβ death, his wife Laura, who also teaches at the high school, toldΒ The New York TimesΒ thatΒ her husband had been βexcitedβ to catch students in the act during the the junior and senior prank war, which had been a student tradition for years.
She added that the family supports the charges against the students being dropped.
βThis is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,β she said. βThis would be counter to Jasonβs lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.β
A GoFundMeΒ account has been set up to raise money for his widow and their two sons.
βJasonβs life was a blessing to so many, and his untimely passing will be indescribably difficult for his wife and two young boys for years to come,β the fundraiser stated. βPlease use this opportunity to come alongside them in their time of immediate need and future planning for his children.β
Itβs unclear whether any of the suspects have retained an attorney.Β Hall County Sheriffβs Sgt. Danielle Cuneo toldΒ Oxygen.comΒ that all five students had been released on bond.
