Slain cartel leader ‘El Mencho’ buried in a golden casket
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was buried Monday in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, according to a federal official.
The official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed that Oseguera Cervantes was laid to rest in a cemetery in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara — Mexico’s second-largest city.
Witnesses described a funeral procession that included dozens of attendees, many carrying black umbrellas despite sunny weather. A band played traditional Mexican regional music known as banda during the burial ceremony. Photos circulating online show a shiny golden casket surrounded by large flower wreaths.
The burial reportedly took place amid a significant security presence in the region. Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office declined to confirm the burial location, citing security reasons.
“El Mencho” had long been considered one of the most powerful and elusive cartel figures in Mexico, leading one of the country’s most influential criminal organizations.
