On the morning of Oct. 9, 2020, Taylor Parker frantically called 911 and told the dispatcher that she had given birth in her car.

At the same time, a state trooper pulled her over for erratic driving. Upon seeing into the car, the trooper discovered Parker holding a fetus with the umbilical cord still attached. She begged to be taken to the hospital and have the baby treated.

However, shortly after she was transported to the hospital, doctors discovered that she had not given birth and that she had been lying about being pregnant for 10 months; the baby also died. Police quickly connected her to a brutal crime that had been committed in a nearby town.

Reagan Simmons-Hancock — who was Parker’s friend — was 35 weeks pregnant and brutally murdered that same morning. Her unborn baby had been cut out and stolen from her.

Despite maintaining that the baby was hers and that she had given birth, Parker was arrested and charged with capital murder, murder and kidnapping. She was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to death in November 2022.

The tragic murder and fetal kidnapping are the subject of the Netflix documentary Maternal Instinct, which came to the streamer on June 12. In addition to including interviews from several people involved, the documentary also included bodycam footage of Parker’s 911 call, arrest and interrogation.

Here’s everything to know about what happened after Taylor Parker committed murder and kidnapped an unborn baby.

Why did Parker call 911?

At 9:36 a.m. on Oct. 9, 2020, Parker called 911 and sobbed while alleging that she had just given birth in her car.

“I need an ambulance, ’cause I started having my baby!” she cried to the dispatcher. “I have a trooper behind me!”

Parker, who was driving in De Kalb, Texas, specifically asked for an ambulance to take her to a hospital in Idabel, Okla.

“Hurry, please!” she said, while claiming that her doctor was in Idabel. “I started having my baby!”

As Parker remained on the line with the 911 dispatcher, Texas DPS trooper Leonzel Shavers pulled her over for speeding and erratic driving. As he approached the car, he noticed Parker motioning out of the window to him to come over.

Parker opened the car door, and she revealed that she was holding a fetus with the umbilical cord still attached. At the same time, Parker held her cell phone out and was crying to the dispatcher.

“There’s something wrong with her!” she screamed. “I had my baby, and I’m trying to get to Idabel hospital where my husband, yeah my husband’s up there. He was delivering hogs right outside of Idabel, that’s why I was trying to get to him. Can you call my husband?”

When asked how old the baby was, Parker frantically replied, “maybe 35 minutes old!”

“Can you just put me in your car and drive us, so we’re not sitting, please? I’m begging you,” she asked Shavers.

Ther trooper later testified that the baby did not appear to be breathing and that Parker had blood on her face and body, according to KTAL News. Parker continued sobbing and declared that the baby was “not breathing,” while a nearby driver pulled over and tried to perform CPR on the baby.

Shavers ended up giving a phone to Parker, who called her boyfriend, Wade Griffin, and told him that she had delivered their baby on the side of the road and that she was being transported to Titus Regional Medical Center in Texas.

Paramedics eventually arrived and transported Parker and the baby to the hospital on gurneys.

“So you was on your way to Idabel to have the baby?” one of the paramedics asked, to which she blubbered and barely got out, “Yeah.”

What did Parker say happened at the hospital?

Shortly after Parker was transported to the hospital, she was briefly evaluated but refused to have a vaginal check, according to a doctor in bodycam footage. However, an ultrasound and other tests showed that she was never pregnant.

As doctors prepared for the next steps, Parker started to be questioned by various investigators who repeatedly asked her what happened. When asked if she had given birth “on the side of the road,” Parker looked confused but answered, “Yes sir.”

“Did I do something wrong for them bringing me over here?” she asked while crying.

Parker said that she had had a baby girl and was planning on naming her Clancy Gaile. She reiterated that she had given birth to the child and continued crying.

“I don’t know what everybody wants me to talk about,” she said.

Authorities encouraged Parker to tell them the truth about “where the baby came from,” but Parker maintained that she “just told y’all what happened.”

Shortly afterward, a doctor evaluated her and determined that she did not give birth, so investigators continued pressing her.

“Where’d this baby come from?” one of the authorities asked, to which she cried, “It’s mine!”

Police warned her that they were aware of Reagan’s murder and fetal kidnapping, but Parker maintained that “nothing happened.” She was subsequently put in handcuffs and placed in a police car.

Parker told varying accounts about what happened with Reagan’s murder when police pressed her in the interrogation. She alleged that the friends got into a heated physical confrontation, so Reagan told her to “take” the baby.

“She was talking, and it was kind of like, I’d grabbed my head because my head was pounding, and she told me, ‘You need to lay down and sleep because you’re not sleeping,’ and she grabbed me, just in a caring manner … and that’s when she scratched me,” Parker alleged in the footage, per KTAL News.

Parker alleged that Reagan “wouldn’t let” her leave, so she pushed her.

“She was shaking me and I was already out of my f—ing mind,” Parker said while crying. “I knew something bad was gonna happen … It was like when I shoved her down, everything changed.”

The interrogator continued pushing her to get the story straight, but Parker wavered in her answer and said she only remembered pushing Reagan. Parker further alleged that it was Reagan who pulled out a knife — not her.

“I remember taking her [the fetus] out, I know that,” Parker said, while later clarifying, “That was the only way to get her out … I had to cut her out.”

However, police weren’t buying what Parker was saying and pointed out all the evidence against her.

“I did not do that,” she said while crying. “I would admit to something that I did to. What the f—!”

She further claimed, “All she did was lay there and talk to me when I cut her … She was screaming, ‘Take her out. Take the baby out!’ She said, ‘I’m finished!’ She said, ‘I’m dying.’ She was talking to me! And she just begged me, she said, ‘You can have her, just take her!’ “
