‘The Four Seasons’ Season 2 Ending Explained: What That Major Cameo Means For a Potential Season 3
The Four Seasons Season 2 is finally here and ready to have you living vicariously through this hilarious friend group once again… especially by the end.
**Spoiler alert: This article contains details from the entire second season of The Four Seasons, now streaming on Netflix**
Just a little over a year since we fell in love with Jack (Will Forte), Kate (Tina Fey), Claude (Marco Calvani), Danny (Colman Domingo), Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver), Ginny (Erika Henningsen), and Nick (Steve Carrell), the gang is back — sans Carrell, whose character died shockingly in the penultimate episode of Season 1 — and taking the business of quarterly trips very seriously. The series picks up just after things ended in Season 1, flashing forward to spring as the group is spreading Nick’s ashes in upstate New York, where a very pregnant Ginny — the much younger girlfriend Nick had started dating prior to his death — is coming to terms with raising a baby by herself. There’s also still the general awkwardness between Ginny and Anne, Nick’s wife of two decades, who is playing nice but cannot get over the overall discomfort of the situation.

By the end of the season, however, the group has mostly mended fences and worked out their issues (for now, that is), which leads us to an action-packed finale that spans two continents. Oh, and in terms of ending on cliffhangers by introducing new characters into the mix, The Four Seasons Season 2 finale might just take the cake. So, shall we get into it?
Here’s a full breakdown of The Four Seasons Season 2 ending, including that surprising appearance by David Tennant in the final moments…
The Four Seasons Season 2 David Tennant Cameo Explained: How the Creators Got Him To Appear In the Final Episode of Season 2?
It’s called manifestation, look it up! According to series co-creators Tracey Wigfield and Lang Fisher, it just so happened that when they were initially talking about actors who could come in and match Kerri Kenney-Silver’s energy, vibe, and height (Kenney-Silver is 5’10”), Tina Fey — who also serves as co-creator and EP on the project — threw out the Doctor Who and Rivals star as a pie-in-the-sky wish.
“Anne obviously has been on a journey in Season 1 and then Season 2 as well, you know, she’s trying to be Anne 2.0 and have this sort of personal renaissance, but it’s not going great. So there was something really exciting when we were thinking about a cliffhanger for a possible Season 3 of having a romantic cliffhanger, and someone that you would get so excited to see more stories with,” Wigfield told DECIDER in a sitdown for Season 2. And Tina, the first person she said was, ‘Well, someone like David Tennant, like a David Tennant kind of guy, as her neighbor.’”
Fisher and Wigfield say that they were expecting Tennant and his team to say that he would have to pass (he is a busy guy, in case you didn’t realize!), but when they reached out to him to see if he might even be interested, they were shocked to find out just how on board he was.
“We were so thrilled that we went to him first and he said yes,” Wigfield shared. “He flew in and we shot it — it was just the one scene — so we shot it in one day, and he’s so lovely and he looks so good with Kerri.”

Now, it’s all about waiting to find out if they get a third season so that they can explore the electric chemistry they discovered between these two actors. No word yet on The Four Seasons Season 3, but the creators are hoping it comes soon so they can get to work on planning out how to make Tennant and Kenney-Silver potentially fall in love (we can only hope).
“They’re both like long little stringbean people and they look so good together and had such nice chemistry that it made me really excited about, you know, a possible Season 3,” she said, to which Fisher added that it is 100 percent their plan to include Tennant more in future episodes.
Does anyone have a spare shooting star we could wish on?
The Four Seasons Season 2 Ending Explained:
After moving to Italy between Thanksgiving and winter, The Four Seasons Season 2 finale sees Claude and Danny fully now adjustinging to their new life back in Claude’s home country, only to have to drop everything and fly back to the U.S. to take care of Danny’s ailing mother. While the plan is for the pair to head back to Italy after nursing her back to health, Claude ultimately decides that they are needed back in the States for Danny’s mom and potentially his elderly aunt, as well, but that’s neither here nor there.
Meanwhile, back in Italy, Jack is still beating himself up for a year that he considers to be a failure, having losing his best friend, falling just shy of his goal to run a marathon, and going through this psuedo-separation/ “going their own ways” thing with Kate. It all comes to a head, however, when Jack and Kate are walking home from dinner and stumble upon city workers setting up for a marathon, set to take place the next day. Kate somehow convinces Jack to sign up for it as a way to hopefully get his groove back. Having fallen out of shape in the month and some change that his ankle has been in recovery and facing the harsh climate of a “maratona” in a hilly Italian city, Jack struggles to finish the race, forcing Kate to jump in with him to help him finish. While running — actually, let’s call it jogging at best — the two finally talk through the worries they’ve been silently dealing with for months, crossing the finish line in the process and realizing that they will never be able to have a healthy relationship or marriage if they don’t remain open with each other. It’s a sweet moment chased by the realization that they are never going to know soreness like they will the next day.

Elsewhere, Anne — who spent the entire day out and about at the marathon and taking photos of herself on an Italian adventure to send to Mark Brett (Steven Pasquale) — decides that she is tired of pretending to live or pretending to be happy when she is not. After quickly falling for Mark Brett via text and then accidentally sending him a photo of her nether regions, she realizes that by faking happiness, she actually had found some semblance of excitement. After talking with Ginny and the gang, hastily, she decides that it’s time to start actually living and tells the group that she will be staying in Italy for the time being. Even better, she’s planning to housesit for Danny and Claude while they hang out back in Philadelphia with his mother. The group ends on good terms, overall, and it’s as she sends Kate and Jack off to the airport to head home that she comes face-to-face with her new neighbor, Gianpiero (Tennant) who catches her eye.
Shall we predict that the next hottest and funniest couple in TV is coming? We can only hope.
