A horrific murder has taken place at a busy intersection near East 10th Street in Del Rio, Texas, leaving a mother of five dead. The victim has been identified as 32-year-old local resident Caroline “Caro” Peña. The incident unfolded shortly after 2:00 PM on Thursday right outside a Sonic Drive-In, an area highly frequented by local traffic and pedestrians.
According to investigators, surveillance cameras in the area captured the entire violent confrontation. The footage reportedly shows a bloodied Peña standing face-to-face with her attackers moments before the final, fatal stab wounds were delivered. The victim was stabbed a total of three times, including twice in the back and once in the abdomen. Although she was rushed to Val Verde Regional Medical Center and immediately airlifted to a specialized hospital in San Antonio for emergency surgery, Peña could not overcome her injuries and passed away at approximately 9:00 PM that evening.
THREE SUSPECTS IDENTIFIED AS BRAZEN ATTITUDE SPARKS OUTRAGE
Immediately after being notified by hospital staff, detectives with the Del Rio Police Department launched an investigation, reviewing surveillance footage, processing the crime scene, and interviewing witnesses. Within a matter of hours, authorities established the identities of the individuals involved and moved to arrest three young women directly tied to the fatal stabbing.
The suspects include two sisters, 21-year-old Kitty Mia Diaz and 19-year-old Amaya Cookie Diaz, along with their associate, 21-year-old Kyandra Renee Faz. All three women face formal murder charges and are currently being held at the GEO Correctional Facility pending their upcoming court dates.
A video recorded outside the Diaz sisters’ residence during the arrests has since gone viral, drawing massive public outrage across social media platforms. In the footage, suspect Kitty Diaz is seen walking out barefoot and wearing minimal clothing, yet she openly smiles at the camera, showing absolutely no remorse or fear as police officers escort her to a waiting patrol unit. To date, prosecutors have not released a specific motive behind the deadly confrontation.
THE GRIEF LEFT BEHIND FOR A DEVOTED MOTHER
The sudden and savage death of Caroline Peña has left an irreplaceable void in her family, particularly for her five young children, the oldest of whom is only 17 years old. Friends, family, and neighbors in this border community of roughly 35,000 residents have been left entirely devastated by the loss.
Fighting back tears during an interview with local news outlet KENS 5, Zelina Ochoa, a childhood friend of the victim, remembered Peña as someone who was simply born to be a mother and loved her children fiercely, adding that she was the type of person who would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need. Another close friend, Christina Salinas, shared her immense heartbreak after missing a phone call from Peña just minutes before the attack took place. Salinas managed to rush to the hospital to say a final goodbye to her best friend before she was loaded onto the medical helicopter. The Del Rio Police Department is continuing its investigation to uncover the full circumstances behind the crime and urges anyone with additional information to contact authorities immediately.
