PART 4 — “Jeremy’s Final Letter Was Never Meant to Be Found…”
Carol’s hands trembled so violently she nearly dropped the envelope into the ocean.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Jeremy’s careful slanted letters.
The same handwriting that once filled birthday cards, grocery notes, and little messages tucked into her purse during hard years of marriage.
But this letter was different.
Because Jeremy had written it three days before he died.
And somehow… she had never seen it.
The waves crashed loudly beneath the resort balcony as Carol slowly unfolded the paper.
For a moment, she couldn’t breathe.
Then she began reading.
My Carol,
If you are holding this letter, then Eleanor finally decided to break her promise and tell you the truth.
Carol’s stomach tightened instantly.
There are things I hid from you because I was ashamed. Not because I didn’t love you — God knows you were the greatest thing that ever happened to me — but because one terrible decision followed me my entire life.
Carol gripped the railing harder.
Behind her, luxury guests laughed near the pool, completely unaware that her world was cracking open sentence by sentence.
Before I met you, I worked security at the Seabrook Grand Resort. One night in 1979, something happened there that destroyed several powerful men… and nearly destroyed me too.
Carol frowned.
Powerful men?
She continued reading.
Eleanor’s father wasn’t the respectable businessman people believed he was. He used the resort to host illegal gambling parties for politicians, judges, and wealthy investors.
Carol’s eyes widened.
One night, a young waitress disappeared after threatening to expose what she saw.
The ocean wind suddenly felt ice cold.
Her name was Teresa Vale.
Carol had never heard the name before.
But Jeremy’s next sentence made her knees weaken.
I was the last person to see her alive.
A sharp gasp escaped Carol’s lips.
No.
No, Jeremy couldn’t possibly mean—
Suddenly her phone rang loudly, nearly making her jump.
It was Daniel Reeves.
“Mrs. Bennett,” the lawyer said urgently, “where are you right now?”
“At the resort.”
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel lowered his voice.
“You need to leave immediately.”
Carol’s heart began pounding.
“What are you talking about?”
“There’s someone there asking questions about you. Someone who should not know about Jeremy’s letter.”
A cold wave of fear spread through her chest.
“Who?”
But before Daniel could answer—
a shadow moved behind Carol.
She spun around sharply.
A tall older man stood near the balcony entrance wearing an expensive navy suit and dark sunglasses despite the cloudy weather.
He smiled politely.
Too politely.
“You must be Carol,” he said calmly.
Something about him instantly felt wrong.
“I’m sorry,” Carol said cautiously. “Do I know you?”
The man removed his sunglasses slowly.
“No,” he replied. “But your husband knew me very well.”
Carol’s blood ran cold.
Because she recognized his face instantly from old newspaper articles Daniel had shown her earlier.
Richard Whitmore.
Eleanor Whitmore’s younger brother.
The man who inherited the remaining half of the Seabrook fortune.
And according to Daniel…
the man who had spent thirty years burying every scandal connected to the resort.
Richard glanced briefly at the letter in Carol’s trembling hands.
“So,” he said quietly, “Eleanor finally gave you Jeremy’s confession.”
Carol instinctively stepped backward.
Confession?
The word echoed violently inside her head.
Richard sighed heavily.
“You should know something before you continue reading.”
His voice remained calm.
Almost gentle.
Which somehow made him more terrifying.
“Your husband wasn’t just a witness that night.”
Carol stared at him.
“He helped Teresa escape the resort.”
Everything stopped.
The ocean.
The wind.
Even her heartbeat.
“What?”
Richard’s expression darkened.
“She stole documents from my father’s private office. Documents exposing politicians, judges, police chiefs… people who would’ve gone to prison.”
Carol felt dizzy.
“She was trying to flee,” Richard continued. “Jeremy drove her to the marina.”
Carol’s fingers tightened around the letter.
“But she never made it onto the boat.”
A horrifying silence followed.
Then Richard stepped closer.
“The next morning Teresa disappeared forever.”
Carol’s voice cracked.
“What happened to her?”
Richard stared directly into her eyes.
“That,” he said softly, “depends which version of the story you believe.”
Suddenly Daniel’s warning returned to Carol’s mind.
Leave immediately.
Fear surged through her chest.
She turned to walk away—
but Richard calmly blocked the doorway.
“I wouldn’t do that.”
Carol froze.
Below them, thunder rumbled over the ocean.
Richard’s smile vanished completely now.
“You see, Mrs. Bennett… Eleanor made a very dangerous mistake before she died.”
Carol’s breathing became shallow.
“She left you more than resort shares.”
Richard slowly pulled a small silver key from his pocket.
“She also left you access.”
“Access to what?”
Richard looked toward the crashing waves below.
Then he whispered the sentence that made Carol’s entire body go numb.
“A hidden safe beneath the original Seabrook property.”
Inside, according to Richard, were the missing documents Teresa Vale tried to expose forty years ago.
Evidence powerful enough to destroy political dynasties.
Evidence people may have killed for.
And suddenly Carol understood something horrifying.
Jeremy’s death seven years ago…
might not have been as accidental as everyone believed.
Before she could speak again, another voice suddenly shouted from behind them.
“GET AWAY FROM HER!”
Sam.
Carol spun around in shock as her son came running onto the balcony, completely out of breath.
But he wasn’t alone.
Behind him stood two federal agents.
And the second Richard Whitmore saw them…
his calm expression finally cracked into fear.
