THE MOMENT EVERYONE IS WATCHING… Austin allegedly moved closer to Karmelo while he was seated, touching or grabbing him. The witness described both hands in motion, Karmelo’s hand still in the bag, height differences, and tone escalation. Yet the same witness insists Karmelo provoked the confrontation, contradicting part of his own testimony. The courtroom is tense as jurors try to untangle friendly interactions from aggression. Every nuance, movement, and word is now critical to understanding the event. And with each conflicting statement, the case becomes even more complicated. The high-profile murder trial of Karmelo Anthony in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf is scheduled to begin next week in Collin County.

Anthony, now 18, faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of 17-year-old Metcalf, a Frisco Memorial High School student. Prosecutors allege Anthony fatally stabbed Metcalf once in the chest during an altercation at a rainy Frisco ISD track meet on April 2, 2025, at Kuykendall Stadium.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. during a district track and field championship event delayed by thunderstorms. Witnesses reported an argument between the two students in the Memorial High School team tent area. Defense attorneys have maintained that Anthony acted in self-defense after being pushed.

The case has drawn intense attention across North Texas, sparking community discussions about youth violence, school safety, and self-defense laws. It also led to protests and significant online activity surrounding both families.

Jury selection is expected to begin Monday, June 1, 2026, in the 296th District Court with Judge John R. Roach presiding. Due to high public interest, the judge has issued strict rules on courtroom conduct, media access, and security to ensure a fair trial.

If convicted, Anthony could face up to life in prison. The case remains one of the most closely watched criminal trials in Collin County this year.
