BREAKING NEWS: “I’M SURE HE DIDN’T DO THIS JUST FOR THE MONEY.” — A family member of Nancy Guthrie has spoken out after an unexpected development in the case, as relatives insist they do not recognize the masked figure captured on surveillance the night of the alleged abduction. The statement follows the sudden emergence of video footage and renewed search efforts near her daughter and son-in-law’s home — details that strongly imply new investigative leads, though authorities have yet to confirm their significance. Online, speculation is intensifying, with many questioning whether the motive behind the disappearance could be more complex — and more dangerous — than initially believed. Viewers have begun dissecting every frame of the footage, analyzing body language, posture, and movement as if searching for a hidden clue in plain sight. For now, officials remain tight-lipped — and the unanswered questions are only deepening the tension surrounding a case that feels far from over.
Nancy Guthrie’s family has revealed they do not recognize the masked individual captured on surveillance footage outside her Arizona home, even as police detain a person of interest in the case near Tucson.
The disturbing video, released by federal authorities on Tuesday, marked the first significant development in the ten days since the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie vanished without a trace. Until the footage surfaced, investigators had been working with few concrete leads.
The doorbell camera recording shows a shadowy figure approaching Nancy’s home in the early hours of February 1. The individual is dressed in dark clothing, wearing a ski mask and black latex gloves, and carrying a backpack. At one point, the suspect stares directly into the camera before attempting to block the lens with a clenched fist. Moments later, the figure forcefully rips the Nest doorbell camera from its mount.
Deputies later confirmed the device was missing when they arrived at the property that morning.
In an eerie sequence captured before the camera was removed, the suspect can be seen tearing flowers from the entranceway and waving them toward the lens, seemingly attempting to obscure the view. Investigators have not publicly identified the individual, and Nancy’s three children have now stated they do not recognize the person in the footage.
Savannah Guthrie shared still images from the video on Instagram, writing: “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.” The family has urged the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the masked figure.
Earlier that same day, law enforcement activity intensified across the neighborhood. Officers were seen canvassing homes near Nancy’s daughter Annie Guthrie’s residence, speaking with neighbors and requesting surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Search teams combed through dense bushes behind Annie and her husband Tommaso Cioni’s home, examined a junkyard, and investigated another property at the end of the street.
One neighbor, John Grove, said officers asked permission to search a dry riverbed on his land. “The cops wanted to know if they could go through that wash next to my house — I said they could,” he explained. When he asked whether it was related to the kidnapping, officers declined to confirm. “They’re playing their cards close to their chest,” he said.
Grove expressed concern about the unforgiving desert terrain. “It’s very harsh out here,” he added. “We had someone move here recently who got lost and died. For someone her age, it wouldn’t end well.”
Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31 after having dinner at Annie and Tommaso’s home. According to authorities, Tommaso drove her back to her house around 9:48 p.m., and her garage door closed minutes later. Everything appeared normal — until hours later.
At approximately 1:47 a.m., her doorbell camera was disconnected. The newly released footage shows that was the moment the masked figure removed it from the doorframe.
As investigators continue to piece together the timeline, the family remains steadfast in their belief that Nancy is still alive — and that someone, somewhere, recognizes the person behind the mask.
