Authorities say the ute may have been involved in multiple incidents before it suddenly veered off the Calder Highway — killing 14-year-old Connroy Clark and leaving his two cousins fighting for their lives in hospital. 
But investigators are now reportedly focusing on what happened inside the vehicle in the final moments before the crash… and why witnesses claim the timeline still doesn’t fully add up.

Connroy Clark, just 14 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. His cousin Dougie Sullivan, 18, the alleged driver, and Dougie’s younger brother Deondre Hayes, 14, were both critically injured and had to be cut free from the mangled ute by rescue crews. Both were airlifted to Melbourne hospitals in a desperate fight for survival.
Dougie underwent surgery at The Alfred Hospital and has lost the lower part of his right leg, with doctors still assessing further amputation risks. He also suffered broken ribs and a bleed on the brain. Deondre remains in ICU at the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious concerns over a bleed and swelling on his brain. However, earlier footage has emerged showing the teens in or around a swerving stolen car in the hours before the tragedy, with some reports of them “hanging outside” the vehicle. These images have only deepened the heartbreak and raised fresh questions about the lead-up to the devastating final moments.
Connroy: A Fun-Loving Boy With a Big Heart
Those who knew Connroy describe him as a fun-loving, outgoing, good-spirited, and respectful young boy. His devastated mother, Chereeta Wightman, has spoken publicly through her unimaginable grief, revealing the family had tried desperately to keep Connroy on the straight and narrow after previous run-ins with the law.
“We’ve tried so hard to keep Connroy on a straight and narrow and to keep him out of trouble,” she told reporters. “He was fun-loving, outgoing, a good-spirited kid, very respectful.”
The family has emphasised the tough circumstances the boys grew up facing. Connroy’s aunty, Maryanne Frost, added: “If people actually knew these boys’ story and what they went through growing up, they would understand.”
In an emotional plea to other young people, the family urged troubled teens to think twice before making dangerous choices. “It just takes one little mistake. Then your family’s suffering, and then we’ve got to go through the pain of burying yous,” said Maryanne.
Chereeta expressed particular sorrow for her nephews: “At the end of the day, he’s got to live with what he’s done… I feel for him. I feel for both the boys, all of them, and my son.”
