Atletico Madrid fans made sandwiches in the stands.
In the early hours of March 11th , the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 match between Atletico Madrid and Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium unfolded in a one-sided manner. The home team quickly took a 4-1 lead. Their dominant performance left Atletico fans feeling relaxed.
A striking image emerged from the stands when television cameras captured an Atletico Madrid fan making bread during first-half stoppage time. The man carried a large baguette along with ham and cheese, and leisurely toasted it right in the stands. Notably, this same fan had previously performed a similar act when Atletico thrashed Frankfurt 5-1 in October 2025.
The composure of the Atletico fans clearly reflected the game on the pitch. Atletico Madrid started strongly and quickly put pressure on the visitors. Goals from Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann, Julian Alvarez, and Robin Le Normand helped Diego Simeone’s team establish an early four-goal lead.
Tottenham only managed to score one goal to reduce the deficit, courtesy of Pedro Porro. With a significant advantage in the first half, Atletico almost completely controlled the game. They proactively maintained the tempo of the match and forced Tottenham to chase the ball for most of the time.
As a result, each team scored another goal in the second half, ending the match with a 5-2 victory for Atletico. This is a huge advantage for the La Liga representatives going into the second leg. Meanwhile, for the first time in history, Tottenham lost six consecutive matches in all competitions.
