A young mother was killed in California by dogs who were attacking her son after she jumped in to protect him.
Emily Panuco, 26, died last Friday in Big River – near the Arizona border – around 3.30pm after going to visit her mother in the 6700 block of Wingfoot Court.
Panuco and her son, five, were there to visit young puppies that belonged to Panuco’s mother, according to the Colorado River Sheriffs Department.
When the boy went to pet the puppies, three adult dogs on the property suddenly attacked him.
Panuco jumped in to protect her son and was also mauled by the canines, police said.
She suffered multiple bite wounds and was declared dead from her injuries.
Her son sustained two ‘severe dog bites,’ police said, and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The three dogs were subsequently euthanized by animal control.

Panuco’s son was released after being treated at the hospital, according to law enforcement.
More information about the young boy’s condition were not immediately disclosed.
The puppies were in a cardboard board box near the front door of Panuco’s mom’s residence, police said.
Law enforcement did not reveal any other details about the dogs or about Panuco’s mom.
The only other detail provided was that the dogs were euthanized by the Colorado River Indian Tribes animal control.
Panuco’s family said that the young mom’s death marked an ‘unimaginable loss’ and that she was survived by her husband Richie and two children.
She lived in Parker, Arizona, according to police.

Panuco was remembered as a ‘devoted mother’ and a ‘beloved wife’ after her sudden passing at the end of last month
A GoFundMe for the family sought to raise money to cover Panuco’s funeral costs and continue helping her husband and children.
‘The shock and pain of this event have left the family reeling, and they are in need of support from their community,’ the fundraiser read.
Her other child is seven months old.
Panuco’s family remembered her as a ‘devoted mother’ who ‘touched the lives of many children and families’ through her job.
A public social media profile for Panuco said she worked as an early literacy coordinator for the Colorado River Indian Tribes Library.
Briana Huber, who started the fundraiser and identified herself as Richie’s cousin, honored Panuco as a ‘beloved wife.’
‘Her love for her own family was evident in everything she did, and her absence leaves a tremendous void,’ Huber wrote.
She added that her ‘heart is broken for our family.’
