More than four months after her disappearance, despite countless efforts, the whereabouts of British girl Madeleine McCann remain unknown. In a development that stunned the world at the time, police officially named her parents as formal suspects over the weekend.
Vanished Into the Night
On the evening of May 3, 2007, nearly 4-year-old Madeleine McCann suddenly disappeared while on holiday with her family in Praia da Luz, in Portugal’s Algarve region. Her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, had rented a ground-floor apartment at the Ocean Club resort complex.
According to the Daily Mail, the McCanns said they left Madeleine and her younger sibling asleep in the apartment while they dined at a restaurant about 120 meters away. During dinner, they took turns checking on the children. The first check was at 9:05 p.m. (local time), and the second about 25 minutes later. On both occasions, the children were reportedly asleep in their beds.
However, when Kate returned to the apartment at around 10:00 p.m., she discovered Madeleine’s bed empty and the bedroom window wide open. About 10 minutes after realizing her daughter was missing, Kate phoned local police. Officers arrived roughly 10 minutes after receiving the call. Portuguese investigators later concluded that Madeleine disappeared sometime before 10:40 p.m.

A Desperate Search
Portuguese police launched a series of urgent measures. Authorities initially believed Madeleine may have been abducted. All staff and guests at the Ocean Club were immediately questioned and checked. According to the BBC, questioning continued until 4:30 a.m. the next morning.
Sniffer dogs were deployed to search the surrounding area for days. Portuguese police also alerted border control authorities along the Spanish border in case Madeleine had been taken out of the country. Airports across the Iberian Peninsula were notified.
Investigators analyzed photographs taken by tourists at the resort in the days leading up to the disappearance, searching for any suspicious individuals. Portuguese media reported that police were pursuing two primary theories: that Madeleine had been abducted by a child exploitation ring, or that she had fallen into the hands of an illegal adoption network.
Portugal worked with Interpol to expand the search across several European and African countries. According to the Daily Mail, on June 4, the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) reportedly intercepted an Arabic-language phone conversation mentioning “a blonde girl” and a German man aboard a ferry traveling from Tarifa, Spain, to Morocco. On June 7, Spanish police received a phone call from Argentina claiming knowledge of Madeleine’s whereabouts. On June 13, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf received a letter stating Madeleine had been buried in a hillside near the town of Arao, about 15 kilometers from Praia da Luz.
Authorities investigated all of these leads but found no concrete results. By early August, Portuguese police admitted they could no longer be certain that Madeleine was still alive.
Early Suspects
At 7:00 a.m. on May 14, police searched Casa Liliana, the villa of Jennifer Murat, a British national living near where Madeleine disappeared. Authorities even drained the family’s swimming pool to check whether Madeleine might have been drowned.
Police questioned three individuals, including Jennifer Murat’s son, Robert Murat. On May 15, Robert Murat became the first official suspect in the case. Chief Inspector Olegario de Sousa confirmed that a 33-year-old man had been questioned but that there was insufficient evidence for an arrest.
Portuguese media also reported that police questioned Sergey Malinka, a 22-year-old Russian national who had designed a website for Robert Murat. The two had spoken frequently by phone after Madeleine disappeared, raising suspicion. However, Malinka denied involvement, and authorities lacked sufficient evidence to detain him. On August 4, police searched Casa Liliana again, using advanced equipment and a British sniffer dog, but found no trace of Madeleine.

Parents Named as Suspects
A dramatic turning point came when Gerry and Kate McCann were formally named as official suspects. On September 6, Portuguese investigators questioned 39-year-old Kate McCann for 11 hours. Initially, family representatives stated she was being interviewed only as a witness. However, following another interrogation on September 7, she was declared a formal suspect.
According to a family spokesperson, police claimed to have evidence suggesting Kate may have been involved in her daughter’s death. Authorities reportedly informed the McCanns that traces of Madeleine’s blood had been found in a rental car they had used during the holiday.
A relative, Philomena McCann, later revealed that police suspected Kate may have accidentally killed Madeleine and then attempted to conceal the body. On September 7, Gerry McCann was also questioned and formally named a suspect. Portuguese media speculated that the couple may not have returned to check on their children as they had told police. However, lacking sufficient evidence for arrest, authorities allowed the McCanns to return to the United Kingdom on September 9.
Other Search Efforts
Parallel to the official investigation, the McCann family launched their own campaign. They created a website, FindMadeleine.com, to seek public assistance and gather information. Madeleine’s image and identifying details were prominently displayed. One distinctive feature was a dark mark beneath her pupil, resembling the position of a clock hand at 7 o’clock.
Within the first 10 days, more than 55 million people reportedly visited the website, with tens of thousands leaving messages of support. The McCanns also received public backing from Pope Benedict XVI. According to the Associated Press, several public figures — including author J.K. Rowling and soccer star David Beckham — supported efforts to raise $2 million to fund the search.
Over the years, authorities received countless reports claiming sightings of Madeleine in Morocco, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, and elsewhere. Each lead was investigated thoroughly, yet none yielded definitive answers.
To this day, a cloud of mystery continues to surround the fate of Madeleine McCann.
