A California firefighter allegedly beat his wife to death with an axe moments after finding and reading her diary, according to reports.

Andrew Jimenez, 45, is being held on murder charges with a $2 million bail after his wife, Mayra Jimenez, 55, was found dead in their home, ABC-7 Los Angeles reported.

In a statement from an attorney hired by Andrew Jimenez’s family, the incident occurred shortly after Andrew read his wife’s diary.

“Our office is currently in contact with law enforcement regarding a diary of the decedent, apparently read moments before the homicide, that verified infidelity by the decedent,” the statement to ABC-7 said.

Events unfolded early Wednesday morning when Andrew Jimenez waved down passing officers near a police station several miles from his home, Fox 11 reported. He told the officers that he couldn’t get a hold of his wife and asked them to check on her.

The network reported that when the officers went to the home, they found Mayra’s beaten and bloody body. At around 4:25 a.m. they took Andrew into custody for questioning, during which he confessed.

Fox News reported that Andrew Jimenez had worked as a Glendale firefighter since 2008. In a statement to Fox, the fire department said that they were cooperating with investigators and that Jimenez had been placed on leave.

“This is an extremely serious and deeply troubling matter. First and foremost, our hearts are with the victim’s family and loved ones, and we extend our sincere condolences as they grieve this tragic loss,” Fox 11 reported.
