Sarah Danh is all smiles in her latest health update.

Three weeks ago, the bride, 27, returned to the U.S. on an emergency medical evacuation flight after she suffered a sudden “life-threatening health decline” for unknown reasons on the second day of her honeymoon in Japan.

When Danh was initially hospitalized overseas on April 9, doctors diagnosed her with acute liver failure, among other serious health issues. Still in a coma, Danh returned to her home state of Texas on April 21. At the time, doctors identified “severe bilateral brain damage,” and warned her family that she may never wake up or regain normal function.

However, Danh defied the odds. Days later, she was off life support, breathing on her own, and even walking with assistance.

Now, Danh’s family describes her recovery as a “miracle.” Her uncle, Khang Le, shared an update from her mother, Le Le, and father, Danny Le, on Facebook on Monday, May 11, alongside a photo of Danh awake and smiling.

“Sarah’s recovery continues to feel nothing short of a miracle,” Khang wrote, per Danh’s parents. “She has progressed faster than anyone anticipated, and we are incredibly grateful for the outstanding care she has received—especially from the medical team at Methodist Hospital and the liver specialists at Methodist Transplant Hospital.”

Danh works as a labor and delivery nurse at Methodist Hospital Stone Oak in San Antonio, Texas. Handwritten well-wishes and group photos from coworkers, friends, and family decorate the walls of Danh’s hospital room. One encouraging sign reads, “Welcome Home, Sarah,” while another handmade banner says, “Get Well Soon.”

Danh’s liver is currently in “stable” condition. Some fluctuations are “expected,” but her care team is continuing to monitor her closely, according to the family’s latest update.

“One of the most meaningful milestones has been her ability to remember, recognize, and communicate with family and friends,” Danh’s family shares. “Physically, she is gaining strength each day and making steady, encouraging progress.”

Danh’s recovery still has a long way to go, with physical and cognitive therapy as the next step.

“Sarah is now being transferred to TIRR Rehabilitation in Houston, where she will begin focused physical and cognitive therapy as the next step in her recovery,” Danh’s family wrote. “We are deeply thankful for how far she has come and remain hopeful and optimistic about what lies ahead.”
