The content creator had over 88,000 followers, sharing lifestyle content and life with partner Joe McCann

Ashly Robinson — the content creator known online as Ashlee Jenae — died while on a trip to Tanzania. She was 31.

Several of Robinson’s family members shared the news of her death in an April 12 statement on Instagram, writing that the influencer and her fiancé Joe McCann had been on a trip to Zanzibar when she was “found unconscious in her villa and rushed to a local hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later.”

Police said in a statement obtained by local outlet Mwanachi that they believed Robinson died by suicide. They also alleged that, following a “misunderstanding” between Robinson and McCann, hotel management decided to “separate” the pair into two different rooms.

Neither McCann nor the resort Zuri Zanzibar, where the pair were staying, immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

When asked about McCann, police commander Benedict Mapujira said that police were not planning to detain or pursue legal action against him, per Mwanachi. He has not been accused of any wrongdoing by authorities.

Days before her death, Robinson had shared photos and videos from her trip, feeding local wildlife and celebrating her 31st birthday with a rose petal sign. “Chapter 31 and I’m exactly where i need to be,” she captioned an Instagram post. Robinson and McCann had also gotten engaged during a safari, per the family’s statement and a video she posted to Instagram on April 3.

“One moment she was celebrating love and life in truly Ashly fashion, and the next, she was gone,” read the family’s statement. “The suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have more this tragedy even more overwhelming for our family.”

In their statement, the family acknowledged the “active investigation” surrounding Robinson’s death and said that they were working with local authorities in Zanzibar.

On Instagram, Robinson maintained a following of over 88,000 and shared a range of lifestyle content. The content creator, who was based in Portland, Ore., also frequently posted with McCann — sharing loved-up snaps of their date nights and vacations.

“Ashly was deeply loved,” concluded the family’s statement. She was vibrant, full of life, and had so much ahead of her. Our family is completely devastated, and we appreciate the prayers, and compassion we have received as we navigate this unimaginable loss.”
