The family of 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who remains hospitalized in critical condition following a recent shooting in Canada, has issued a direct and emotional statement addressing what they describe as false information circulating online about her recovery.
In a message shared publicly, Maya’s mother firmly denied rumors claiming that her daughter had begun speaking.
“I’m not sure who started the story that Maya is talking,” her mother said. “She has a breathing tube in her throat. She absolutely cannot speak.”
The clarification comes after several posts on social media suggested the critically injured child had regained the ability to communicate — claims the family says are untrue and deeply upsetting during an already traumatic time.
Condition Remains Critical
According to her mother, Maya’s condition remains unstable. She described ongoing medical complications, including what she called “a fairly consistent leakage of cerebrospinal fluid and blood from the ear and surgical site.”
“It feels like we take a step forward and then a step back,” she said, characterizing the recovery process as fragile and uncertain.
The family is currently awaiting further medical evaluation. “We are waiting for the neurosurgeon to return to assess this ongoing issue,” her mother added.
Medical professionals have not released additional public details beyond what the family has shared.

Frustration Over Misinformation
Beyond the medical concerns, Maya’s mother expressed frustration over what she sees as the rapid spread of misinformation online.
“Unfortunately, people seem more interested in creating fake stories about her — or about me, for that matter,” she said.
False updates about high-profile cases often gain traction quickly on social media, leaving families to correct narratives while coping with ongoing crises.
Community Support Continues
Despite the challenges, the family says they are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from their community. They are asking for continued prayers and positive thoughts as Maya remains in critical care.
“We appreciate the love and concern,” her mother said, reiterating the family’s request for privacy and accuracy during this time.
As doctors continue monitoring Maya’s condition, her family hopes the focus will remain on her recovery — and on sharing only verified information moving forward.
