Behind Closed Gates: A Rare Look Inside the Hidden Hideout of Mexico’s Notorious Cartel Boss

Luxury villa No. 39 was the final hideout of notorious Mexican kingpin Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho.

The stone-walled mansion with red-tiled roofs is located in Tapalpa, in the western state of Jalisco, Mexico. The area is known as an eco-tourism and resort destination, famous for its golf courses and scenic lakes.

El Mencho’s two-story “family home” was situated inside the exclusive Tapalpa Country Club, a gated hillside resort made up of secluded villas. Photos taken at the scene where he had been staying show a messy kitchen area, while the bed appeared unmade and cluttered.

Evidence inside the villa suggests El Mencho had been hiding there for an extended period, with large запасes of food and medical supplies. In addition to basic necessities, authorities found numerous medications for insomnia, migraines, acid reflux, and fungal infections. Most of the pharmaceuticals and personal items were still sealed in plastic packaging at the time Mexican special forces raided the property.

Inside the villa, investigators also discovered a small altar displaying statues of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Saint Jude Thaddeus. Notably, a handwritten Bible passage expressing faith in God was placed beside the altar.

In his final days, El Mencho reportedly hid in the villa with a romantic partner. The two rarely left the property.

According to Mexican authorities, El Mencho was shot by military special forces while attempting to flee through the garden behind the villa. His death sent shockwaves through national security circles, though officials say the situation has gradually stabilized.

Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla Trejo said the hideout was uncovered after the military tracked the kingpin’s girlfriend through a trusted associate. During the raid, El Mencho was seriously wounded and later died aboard a helicopter while being transported for emergency treatment.

His death has left a significant power vacuum, triggering territorial battles among rival factions. In response to the government’s operation, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has reportedly declared open confrontation with President Claudia Sheinbaum, who oversaw the takedown of the country’s most notorious cartel leader.
