The search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother has entered a deeply unsettling new phase, as investigators returned to the Arizona home of Nancy Guthrie, days after saying the property had already been fully examined.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, has now been missing for five days, and authorities believe she was taken from her home against her will in what they have described as a “possible kidnapping or abduction.”
On February 4, FBI agents and local investigators, accompanied by canine units, were seen once again at Nancy’s Tucson residence in a renewed effort to uncover fresh clues. The return was notable — and alarming — because just a day earlier, Chris Nanos told reporters that police had completed their search of the home.
According to two senior officials briefed on the case, investigators are now closely examining what appears to be blood found outside the property, a development that has significantly intensified concerns.
Those officials also revealed that Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker disconnected from its monitoring app in the early hours of February 1 — the same day she was officially reported missing.
Despite the growing list of troubling clues, investigators stressed on February 4 that no suspect or person of interest has been identified, warning the public against spreading unverified claims or online speculation.
“At this point, investigators have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case,” the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement shared on social media.
“Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie.”
Authorities believe Nancy was taken from her home sometime after she was last seen on the night of January 31. Her family reported her missing at noon the following day after learning she had not attended her regular church service.
“We believe she was taken out of the home against her will,” Sheriff Nanos said during an appearance on NBC Nightly News on February 2. “That’s how this investigation is moving.”
As the investigation escalated, the case drew national attention. Donald Trump confirmed on February 4 that he had personally spoken with Savannah Guthrie and ordered federal resources to assist.
“I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s and Local Law Enforcement’s complete disposal, immediately,” he wrote. “We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely.”
Adding another layer of uncertainty, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged late on February 3 that it is aware of reports involving possible ransom notes sent to media outlets. While NBC News has not seen the notes and no agency has confirmed their authenticity, officials said they are actively investigating the claims and treating all tips seriously in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
At a February 3 press conference, FBI officials explained that agents are assisting by analysing cell phone data and tower records, conducting interviews and providing technical investigative support. Anyone with information has been urged to contact authorities immediately.
Throughout the ordeal, Savannah Guthrie has shared emotional public updates. Late on February 4, she appeared in a video alongside her siblings, making a heartfelt plea for their mother’s safe return.
“Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman,” Savannah said. “You are God’s precious daughter. Everyone is looking for you everywhere. We will not rest until we are together again.”
Her first statement came earlier, on February 2, when she thanked supporters for their prayers and encouraged anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s department.
Investigators have also provided sobering details about Nancy’s health. Sheriff Nanos confirmed that while she does not suffer from cognitive issues, she has significant physical limitations and requires medication that could be fatal if not taken within 24 hours.
“She is very limited in her mobility,” he said. “We know she didn’t just walk out of there.”
Officials confirmed they are in possession of Nancy’s cell phone and stated that she lives alone. House staff have been contacted as part of the investigation. Authorities have also said there is no indication that the public is in danger, and they do not yet know whether Nancy was specifically targeted because of her daughter’s public profile.
Nancy Guthrie is described as 5ft 5in tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen by her family at her home between 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. on January 31.
As the search continues — now firmly treated as a criminal investigation — one question remains unanswered: where is Nancy Guthrie?
For her family, the wait grows more agonising with each passing hour.
