Upon arrival, cops discovered the remains of two people – a man and a woman – inside the vehicle.
“Our initial investigation did not show any signs of foul play,” a police spokesman told The U.S. Sun.
“We are waiting on an official cause of death from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.”
He referred the paper to the university for more details.
“The Steubenville Police Department is investigating the incident,” said a spokesman for the Franciscan University.
“Early indicators suggest this was a tragic accident related to a potential vehicle exhaust or engine malfunction.”
Those who knew the students have been sharing poignant tributes online.

“He approached both his academic pursuits and personal relationships with sincerity and care, always willing to lend a helping hand, offer support, or share a kind word.
“His presence brought light and encouragement to those around him, making him a cherished member of the university community.”
The obituary praised Luke for his “ability to connect with people, offering empathy and understanding even in difficult times.”
Those close to the student said he would “be deeply missed” and “forever remembered for his character, kindness, and the joy he brought to others.”
