The Mafia Boss Woke Up and Stopped Them From Removing His Nurse—Then She Revealed What His Fiancée Had Tried to Hide
Dominic Moretti opened his eyes just as two security guards were forcing Grace Bennett out of his hospital room. Instead of calling for his fiancée or asking who had nearly killed him, the wounded Mafia boss reached toward the exhausted nurse and whispered, “Don’t let her leave.” Then he looked at Vanessa Bellini and asked, “Why are you afraid of what she saw?”
Nobody moved.
Forty-eight hours earlier, Grace had been halfway through another overnight shift at St. Catherine Medical Center when the emergency entrance exploded with noise.
Paramedics rushed in two patients from the same incident.
The first was Dominic Moretti.
The second was a six-year-old boy.
Dominic had burns along one shoulder, fractured ribs, and injuries consistent with an explosion. The boy was struggling to breathe, his small fingers wrapped around a broken silver chain with a black cross.
Grace moved between both trauma bays without hesitation.
When Dominic briefly regained consciousness, he caught her wrist.
“The boy?”
“He’s alive,” Grace assured him.
His entire body relaxed.
Then his expression changed.
“Nobody knows about him.”
Before Grace could ask what he meant, Dominic lost consciousness.
Minutes later, Vanessa Bellini arrived with her father and several bodyguards.
She demanded information about Dominic, but when the little boy was wheeled past them, Grace noticed something strange.
Vanessa recognized him.
Only for a second.
But Grace had spent years watching frightened families receive terrible news. She knew the difference between confusion and recognition.
“He came from the same scene,” Grace explained carefully.
Vanessa’s gaze hardened.
“Who are you?”
“His nurse.”
Vanessa looked toward the child again.
“Then take care of my fiancé and stop asking questions.”
Grace hadn’t asked one.
That bothered her.
During the next two days, Dominic remained unconscious while Grace stayed near his room whenever her schedule allowed.
Then she discovered something else.
The boy’s broken necklace had been placed inside a clear evidence bag.
Engraved on the back of the black cross were two tiny initials.
D.M.
Grace said nothing.
That evening, she entered Dominic’s room to check his medication and found Vanessa standing beside his bed.
“You’ve been reassigned,” Vanessa said.
Grace stopped.
“I wasn’t informed.”
“You are now.”
A hospital administrator appeared behind her, accompanied by security.
Grace understood immediately.
This wasn’t about staffing.
Someone wanted her away from Dominic.
When she refused to surrender her notes until another nurse officially assumed responsibility, one guard grabbed her wrist.
That was when Dominic opened his eyes.
“Grace.”
His weak voice silenced the entire room.
The guard released her.
Vanessa rushed toward the bed.
“Dominic, thank God.”
He didn’t look at her.
His eyes remained fixed on Grace.
“Come here.”
Grace slowly approached.
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“She’s only a nurse.”
Dominic finally turned toward his fiancée.
“Then why were you having her removed?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Grace reached into the pocket of her scrubs.
“I think I know.”
Every guard in the room stiffened.
Grace placed a sealed evidence bag on Dominic’s blanket.
Inside was the broken black cross.
Dominic stared at it.
For the first time since waking, genuine fear crossed his face.
“Where did you get this?”
“The little boy was holding it when he arrived.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That proves nothing.”
Grace looked directly at her.
“I never said it proved anything.”
Vanessa froze.
Dominic noticed.
Slowly, painfully, he picked up the evidence bag and turned the cross over.
The initials were visible beneath the hospital lights.
D.M.
His hand began trembling.
Grace lowered her voice.
“There’s something else.”
Dominic looked at her.
“When the child woke up this morning, I asked whether he knew who caused the explosion.”
Vanessa went completely still.
Grace glanced toward her, then back at Dominic.
“He didn’t give me a name.”
She paused.
“He pointed at a photograph.”
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“Whose photograph?”
Grace slowly turned toward Vanessa.
And Vanessa took one involuntary step backward.
