My husband secretly added something unusual to my drink, convinced I would never see it happen. I stayed calm, quietly exchanged our glasses while his attention was elsewhere, and never said a word. Moments later, his mistress reached for the drink intended for me and swallowed a sip. The pan!c on my husband’s face told me everything.
I sensed something was off the instant I noticed my husband’s hand lingering above my wineglass.
Daniel Mercer assumed I was staring toward the windows of the rooftop restaurant, admiring the lights of downtown Chicago shimmering across the dark waters of Lake Michigan. I wasn’t.
Through the reflection in the glass wall beside our table, I watched him pull a tiny packet from his jacket, glance toward the restroom hallway, and pour something light-colored into my drink.
Then he mixed it with my cocktail straw.
My husband of eleven years had just added something to my glass.
I didn’t shout.
I didn’t question him.
I smiled.
When Daniel turned around to welcome the woman approaching our table, I calmly moved my glass to his side and placed his untouched wine in front of me.
The woman was Vanessa Cole.
His “marketing consultant.”
His mistress.
I had known about their affair for three months.
What I hadn’t realized was that they were prepared to cross a line far beyond simply betraying me.
“Claire,” Vanessa said cheerfully, settling into the chair beside Daniel. “You look amazing.”
“Thank you.”
Daniel looked slightly pale, but he forced a smile.
We were supposedly there to celebrate the sale of one of his company’s properties. Daniel had insisted that I come because, as he explained it, Vanessa had helped finalize the deal.
The waiter returned.
Daniel lifted the glass sitting before him—the one he still believed belonged to me.
“To new beginnings.”
I nearly laughed.
Before he could take a drink, Vanessa reached across him.
“Oh, let me try yours. Mine’s too dry.”
Daniel went still.
Vanessa raised the glass.
His lips parted.
Too late.
She took a long sip.
The alarm on Daniel’s face revealed everything.
Vanessa smiled for barely half a second.
Then her expression shifted.
“What is this?”
Daniel caught her wrist.
“Vanessa.”
She blinked several times.
“I feel… strange.”
The glass slipped from her hand and broke against the table.
Nearby diners turned around.
Daniel jumped up so quickly that his chair toppled backward.
“Call an ambulance!”
I stayed seated.
Vanessa’s breathing grew uneven. She held tightly to the edge of the table while Daniel tried to steady her.
Then he looked at me.
Not with concern.
With panic.
Because I was calmly holding the other glass.
His glass.
I took one careful sip.
“You look worried, Daniel.”
His face turned pale.
Within minutes, paramedics hurried Vanessa downstairs.
Daniel followed them, but just before leaving, he leaned close enough that only I could hear him.
“What did you do?”
I met his eyes directly.
“Nothing.”
And that was completely true.
For the first time in our marriage, Daniel had created a dis@ster that I had no intention of fixing for him…………
