It’s been 33 years since John Wayne Bobbitt made headlines after his then-wife, Lorena Bobbitt, severed his penis with a kitchen knife. Though she testified that she acted after years of alleged abuse and rape, he maintained during the trial and in the decades that followed that he was the only victim.

“I was in a toxic relationship, to say the least,” the former Marine said during an April 2025 interview on the Wam Bam podcast. “There’s a lot of things that led up to the attack that people don’t understand.”

After the June 1993 attack, Lorena was charged with malicious wounding, and John was charged with marital sexual assault, per the Washingtonian. They were both acquitted of all charges and finalized their divorce two years later.

So, where is John Bobbitt now? Here’s everything to know about his life, three decades after his wife cut off his genitals.

John apologized to Lorena in a 2009 interview

Over a decade after the attack, John and Lorena agreed to sit down in a joint interview for Insider, during which he apologized for being “an a–hole” and maintained that he “didn’t rape anybody.”

Lorena also claimed that John still sent her flowers and Valentine’s Day cards after they got divorced, per NBC Washington.

He briefly pursued a career in adult entertainment

John continued to make press appearances after his 1994 trial. According to his IMDb, he acted in a handful of adult films from 1994 to 1996 — including one titled Frankenpenis — and appeared multiple times on Howard Stern. He also briefly formed a band called The Severed Parts, per The Hollywood Reporter.

“A porno seemed like the best way to show my penis worked,” John, whose appendage was surgically reattached after a nine-hour operation, told Vanity Fair in June 2018. “Only it wasn’t all-the-way healed yet. I realize now that that was the point.”

Though at least one of his movies was a success, John eventually left the industry to work as a greeter for a brothel in Nevada. He was reportedly hired and fired several times and went on to make a few more media appearances on WWE Monday Night Raw and in the Jim Rose Circus as part of a knife-throwing act.

John was charged with battery two times after his 1994 acquittal, the first of which occurred just months after the trial. Vanity Fair reported that he was sentenced to 60 days in jail after being convicted of misdemeanor battery against a girlfriend, and was later charged with battering his third wife, Joanna Ferrell.

According to Vanity Fair, John was found not guilty of the battery charges related to Ferrell.

He also pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny in 1999 for stealing $140,000 worth of clothing from a Nevada store and was sentenced to five years’ probation. John was found guilty of harassing an ex-girlfriend later that same year.

He had his toes amputated in 2023

In an April 2024 interview with The Sun, John revealed that he had his toes amputated after being diagnosed with toxic peripheral polyneuropathy. He claimed he developed the condition — which causes damage to the peripheral nervous system, per the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke — while being stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina during a period of severe water contamination in the 1980s.

“I wasn’t behaving the way I should have,” John said, which he claimed contributed to the downfall of his marriage with Lorena. “Maybe I would have made better decisions if my cognitive functioning wasn’t distorted by the chemicals.”

Since his diagnosis, John said he has experienced nerve damage and osteomyelitis, a bone infection that caused ulcers and ultimately led to skin grafts. Following surgery to amputate his remaining toes in 2023, he said he was left walking with a limp and unable to work.

According to The Sun, John resides in Sarasota, Fla. His most recent interview was with PEOPLE in October 2025, in which he claimed that he and Lorena had trouble “communicating” and engaged in what he called “emotional abuse” by giving him the “silent treatment” two months before the attack.

“I was a victim of [Lorena’s] abuse, especially that night. She almost killed me,” John claimed, adding that in his view, his ex-wife suffered “deep-seated emotional pain” from “rejection, abandonment, infidelity and neglect.”

John added, “I understand why she did it. I broke her heart. Her heart broke, devastated.”

Lorena has maintained that John abused and raped her during their marriage, which he has consistently denied, and continues to advocate for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors.
