Four people, including two children — a newborn baby girl and a 2-year-old boy— were found dead in a suspected murder suicide in California.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to reports of gunshots inside a home located on Londelius Avenue on Wednesday, May 27, KABC, KTLA and the Los Angeles Times reported.

One victim, a man, was identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner (LACME) as 31-year-old Khajag Basmajian. The two children were identified as 2-year-old Alec Basmajian and Ella Basmajian, who was just six days old.

Law enforcement sources told KABC and the Times that evidence gathered at the crime scene suggested that another person, a woman — who has not been identified, but is believed to be in her 30s — shot the man and the two children before turning the gun on herself.

The LACME has not confirmed causes or manners of death. Autopsies have been scheduled.

“This is an absolute tragedy, and given the number of deceased, the Robbery-Homicide [Division] is handling the investigation,” LAPD Capt. Mike Bland told the Times.

The LAPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, May 30.

One neighbor, Paula Smith, told KTLA that she heard commotion the night of the tragedy and was sad to hear about the children’s deaths.

“We live a few blocks away, and we heard all the helicopters last night. We didn’t know what was going on. But to wake up this morning and to hear about this and these kids, it’s really heartbreaking,” she said.

“So go home and love the people you love. If someone is hurting, please reach out. Don’t be ashamed,” added Smith.

Another neighbor, Karen Banuelos, told the Times, “It’s so depressing, it’s so devastating for everyone.”
