Family says recovery of San Antonio nurse Sarah Danh is ‘nothing short of miraculous’

SAN ANTONIO – We are getting our first look at San Antonio nurse Sarah Danh since she awoke from a coma after suffering acute liver failure while on her honeymoon overseas, in what her family says can only be described as nothing short of miraculous.

In an update shared this Monday, the family of 27-year-old Sarah Danh said her progress has exceeded expectations after she suffered sudden acute liver failure while traveling overseas with her husband, Luke Gradl.

Sarah’s recovery continues to feel nothing short of a miracle,” her parents said in a statement. “She has progressed faster than anyone anticipated, and we are incredibly grateful for the outstanding care she has received.

Danh, a labor and delivery nurse at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, became critically ill just days into the couple’s honeymoon in Tokyo. Her condition rapidly worsened, and she was eventually placed on life support after doctors determined she was experiencing acute liver failure.

Her family previously said the situation came without warning and left loved ones fearing the worst as they worked urgently to bring her back to Texas from Japan.

After weather delays caused by a typhoon slowed medical evacuation efforts, Danh was eventually transported back to San Antonio on a more than 20-hour medical flight with multiple refueling stops.

Once back in Texas, doctors told the family she had suffered bilateral brain damage and warned that she might never wake up or regain normal function.

But in the weeks since, Danh’s family says she has made remarkable strides.

According to her parents, one of the most emotional milestones has been Sarah’s ability to recognize, remember and communicate with family and friends.

“Physically, she is gaining strength each day and making steady, encouraging progress,” the family shared.

Her liver remains stable, though doctors continue to monitor expected fluctuations closely. The family credited the medical teams at Methodist Hospital and Methodist Transplant Hospital for the care Sarah has received throughout her recovery.

The next phase of her recovery will now take place in Houston, where Danh is being transferred to TIRR Rehabilitation Hospital for specialized physical and cognitive therapy.

Her family says they remain hopeful and optimistic as she continues to heal.

Danh’s story has resonated across San Antonio and beyond, with patients, coworkers and strangers rallying around the young nurse through prayers, messages and online donations.

Now, her family says the support she once gave others is helping carry her through the fight for her own recovery.
