A family of four has been identified after being found dead in what police believe was a murder-suicide case. The suspect was identified as 52-year-old Matthew Mitchell, co-owner of the restaurant Traveler’s Table alongside his wife. Police discovered the family dead inside their Houston home during a welfare check on Monday, May 4.

Matthew Mitchell, his Vietnamese-born wife Thy Mitchell, and their two young children were all found shot to death inside their River Oaks home, according to ABC 13 on Tuesday, May 5.

In an earlier press release shared by the Houston Police Department (HPD), the restaurant owners and their children were not publicly named, but authorities said the victims included a 52-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, an 8-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old boy.

The bodies of the well-known Vietnamese restaurant owner, her husband, and their two children were discovered inside their home.

“Our hearts are shattered as we share that my sister Thy and her beloved children, Maya and Max, passed away last night,” Thy’s sister Ly Mai wrote on Facebook Tuesday (May 5).

“Our family is devastated and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be shared when possible. Thank you for your understanding and support,” she added.

Mai also shared several photos of Thy with her two children. In every image, they were smiling brightly while spending time outdoors together.

Matthew and Thy owned two restaurants in Houston. In October 2019, they opened Traveler’s Table, a popular restaurant known for globally inspired modern dishes such as Pad Thai and Jamaican jerk pork. They later launched a second concept, Traveler’s Cart, in 2024.

Brittany Meisner, who previously worked with Thy as her communications manager, shared an emotional tribute to her friend on social media.

“There truly are no words,” Meisner wrote on Instagram. “Thy wasn’t just a client — she was an incredible friend. She was a devoted mother and businesswoman, and we are completely heartbroken and devastated.”

Brittany said Thy was always searching for new adventures, adding that “we had such an amazing time experiencing them together.”

“She will be deeply missed by so many people, including our team, who had the honor of helping tell her story over the past few years,” she added.

Family and friends remain in shock over the sudden tragedy.

Police said the Mitchell family was discovered around 5:25 p.m. local time on Monday, May 4.

Officers responded to a welfare check at the residence after relatives and friends had not heard from or seen the family since the previous evening. When police entered the home, they found four unresponsive people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Evidence at the scene indicated the case was a murder-suicide, with investigators believing the man fatally shot the three victims before turning the gun on himself, police said.

PEOPLE confirmed that Traveler’s Table remained open for business as of Tuesday evening.
