Rex Heuermann admitted to killing eight women in court on April 8, 2026
The ex-wife of Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann said she began sleeping in the basement of their Massapequa Park, N.Y. home where he brutally murdered and dismembered some of his victims.
“The brutal truth is that Rex Heuermann said he dismembered the bodies in this room,” Asa Ellerup said in the final episode of Peacock’s The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets. “That is the brutal truth. OK. Now, there’s me. I’m in this room. And I’m here because I do feel spiritual. I am trying to say spiritually, in my own way, that I am really sorry for what these victims went through.”
In the episode, which aired on Thursday, April 23, Ellerup said she was “haunted by dreams every night. It will never go away. It will follow me for the rest of my life. It will never be any justice for anyone, and there will never be any way to forget about this.”
Ellerup said she has since remodeled the basement following Heuermann’s arrest, and that she began sleeping there about a month before he admitted to the murders in court.

On April 8, 2026, Heuermann pleaded guilty to killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack and Sandra Costilla. He also admitted to the slaying of Karen Vergata, though he was never formally charged in this case.
The remains of the women were found between 1993 and 2011. His killing spree went unsolved until he was arrested in 2023.

“I want to know why Rex killed these women, what his triggers were,” Ellerup said. “I’m processing the information in a very different way. Because now I see the evil in him.”
Ellerup revealed in the documentary that Heuermann came clean about the murders to her in August 2025.
“He looked nervous, very nervous,” she said about her meeting with her ex-husband.“And I said to him, ‘So Mr. Heuermann, I understand that you are confessing to me on these murders.’”
Ellerup said she asked the 62-year-old former architect and father of two how many women he killed.
“He said he killed eight women — eight,” she said. “He said I wasn’t home through all of them. He said they were killed in his room downstairs, all except one.”
Ellerup said Heuermann told her he killed Costilla in their Dodge.
Authorities discovered that Heuermann searched for articles about a task force formed to investigate the murders in 2022 and used an online account to repeatedly view images of his victims and their families.
