PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Police have issued two arrest warrants in connection with a deadly shooting in West Philadelphia that left a 20-year-old woman dead in what police are calling a case of mistaken identity.

The shooting happened Tuesday shortly after 6 p.m. on the 5900 block of Market Street.

The family of Imani Ringgold says the 20-year-old had just left work, stopped to get a slice of pizza and was on the phone with her grandmother when she was shot 18 times.

Police say a Mazda carrying four people pulled up to a group, and three of the occupants got out and opened fire.

“Four individuals inside, three of them exit the vehicle and fire firearms towards the crowd. Three separate people were hit by gunfire,” said Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.

Ringgold was killed, while a 55-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were also shot and are in stable condition, police said.

Investigators have identified two suspects as 26-year-old Mustafa King and 21-year-old Zaire Manning. Both are wanted for homicide. Authorities are also asking for the public’s help in identifying a third shooter and the driver.

Police say the Mazda used in the shooting was quickly recovered in the 5700 block of Samson Street.

Detectives obtained search warrants and recovered evidence that led to the suspects. However, no one is currently in custody.

Police believe the shooters were targeting people in the crowd and that Ringgold was not the intended victim.

“We believe they were firing at people in that crowd, we believe Miss Ringgold wasn’t the intended target and an innocent victim in this case,” Vanore said.

Investigators say the suspects may have fled in a second vehicle, described as a black or gray2024 Kia.

Family members say Ringgold had only recently started a new job as a home health aide and was simply passing through the area when she was killed.

“She was sweet, she was precious, she was kind, she was caring…” said her aunt, Lynette Ringgold. “She was coming home from work, she stopped to get some pizza, she only started at the job two weeks ago so she didn’t even live in the area. She was just passing through.”

Ringgold’s grandmother, Dietra Bynum, said she was on the phone with her granddaughter during the shooting.

“I was on the phone with her the whole time,” Bynum said. “She didn’t even scream or nothing, her phone dropped. And I just kept screaming her name.”

Family members say Ringgold was raised by her grandmother and remembered as a loving young woman.

“That was her first grandchild, now she’s not here anymore. All over something pointless and senseless,” her aunt said. “She was just trying to be a good person, that’s it. At the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s crazy.”

Bynum said she continues to relive the moment.

“Can’t eat, can’t sleep, every time I close my eyes I just keep hearing it over and over again.”

A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
