A man was found dead in a river in western Ireland two days after serving as a pallbearer at his sister’s funeral.

Jason Faulkner helped lay his sister, Scarlett Faulkner, to rest at a church in Limerick, in the province of Munster, on Friday, April 17, The Irish Times, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) and the Irish Independent reported. By Sunday, April 19, he was dead, according to the outlets.

Just after 5 p.m. local time on Sunday, officials received an alert that a body had been found in the Abbey River in Limerick, the Garda Síochána said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

“Fire services removed the body of a man, aged in his 30s,” police continued, “and he was taken to University Hospital Limerick where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.”

Although police have not officially released the man’s identity, the family confirmed Jason had been found dead, according to the reports.

An investigation is ongoing, officials say.

The tragedy brings more grief to the Faulkner family.

OnMonday, April 13, Jason’s sister Scarlett, who was in her 20s, died at a hospital in Cork following an alleged assault on the side of a road in the village of Birdhill, the outlets reported.

Police confirmed to PEOPLE that a “serious assault,” which resulted in the woman’s death, occurred on Saturday, March 21, just before 5:30 p.m. on the R494 road. Following her death, the local coroner was notified and a state post-mortem examination was conducted.

Two people — a 16-year-old girl and a 40-year-old woman, according to reports — have appeared in court charged in connection with the March 21 incident, police said, declining to share any additional comment.

Scarlett, who has a daughter, and her brother Jason are part of a large family that includes 16 siblings, RTÉ previously reported.

At her funeral, Scarlett was remembered as “a young mother, a daughter, a lady whose life was intertwined with love, responsibility and hope,” according to the outlet.

“I’ll cherish every memory we ever shared together. You were a character,” one of her sisters said in an emotional tribute during the ceremony, according to RTÉ. “You always made us laugh, no matter what mood we might have been in.”
