Strictly star John Whaite reveals he has been rushed to hospital after being run over in near-fatal accident

John Whaite has revealed he was run over in a near-fatal accident on Tuesday night.

The Great British Bake Off star, 36, took to Instagram to recall the terrifying moment he ‘rolled over the bonnet, went splat on the road before crawling to safety’.

John was rushed to hospital in an ambulance with doctors later telling him his 16 stone weight and muscle mass saved his life.

In an emotional post, John wrote: ‘Last night I got run over (seriously). I rolled up the bonnet damaging it and the windscreen, before splatting onto the road and crawling to the pavement where some angel of a human threw his coat around me and waited with me for an ambulance.

‘The doctors said “thank god you’re 16 stone of muscle because it could have been fatal”.

‘Moral of the story – build strong muscle and core strength, and don’t wear black while crossing the road in the dark when an idiot comes speeding without looking…’

‘I’ve been scanned and poked and prodded and I’m ok,’ he wrote. ‘Still gay though.’

He later added: ‘For the avoidance of doubt, in my last post I said “speeding”. I used the term figuratively rather than literally.

‘I meant: It was sudden and shocking. I don’t know what speed the driver was going. But it was enough to skittle me up onto his windscreen and down onto the floor.’

John, who took part in Strictly Come Dancing back in 2021, revealed in November he has been battling a steroid addiction.

He said he began taking steroids during lockdown after he looked in the mirror and didn’t like what he saw and has been ‘disrespecting his body’ ever since.

The television personality, who competed on the BBC dance show in 2021, said the side effects of the drug have been devastating – including shrunken testicles and an irregular sex drive.

Opening up about his ordeal, John said: ‘Steroid addiction – the truth. For the past 5 years I’ve let myself down, I haven’t respected my body or my mind, I’ve put body image before my own wellbeing and before time with my family.

‘Steroids have made me want to end my life. That stops today. Right now.’

John continued: ‘That stops now. I choose life. I choose health. I choose love. I choose a simpler life.’

The former Great British Bake Off winner was seen breaking down in tears as he shared the effects of steroid abuse.

He said: ‘I first started taking them during lockdown because I looked in the mirror and I hated what I saw.

‘I tried working out, I tried dieting – I was really strict with my diet – but nothing changed, I couldn’t gain muscle.

‘Looking back, there was nothing wrong with me – I had a normal body.’

Away from his television appearances, John has been raking it in on X-rated platform OnlyFans and previously revealed how much he had been making.

John, who soared to fame after he won the Bake Off back in 2012, rejoined the online platform after stating his 12 year TV career just ‘didn’t set him alight anymore’.
