In a heartbreaking tragedy that has left a Brooklyn neighborhood reeling and reignited fury over gang violence on New York’s streets, a beautiful 7-month-old baby girl named Kaori Patterson-Moore was shot in the head and killed while innocently sitting in her stroller during a brazen daytime attack.

The tiny victim — described by her devastated mother as always laughing, smiling, and having just uttered her very first word, “mama” — was being pushed across the street in East Williamsburg on Wednesday afternoon when two thugs on a moped roared up and opened fire. Police believe the gunmen were targeting Kaori’s father in what they describe as a likely gang-related dispute. Tragically, the innocent baby was the only one fatally struck.
“I can’t get her back. She’s gone, and I can’t ever see her again,” her mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, sobbed in an emotional interview with CBS New York. “I can’t smell her, can’t kiss her. I can’t wake up and feed her her bottle. I can’t dress her. Everything I wanted to do with her, I can’t do with her anymore.”
Instead of preparing for her daughter’s first birthday party later this year, the 20-year-old mother now faces the unimaginable task of planning a funeral for her precious little girl.
The horrific shooting unfolded around 1:25 p.m. on April 1 near the corner of Humboldt and Moore Streets in East Williamsburg, close to the border with Bushwick. Kaori was in a double stroller with her 2-year-old brother as her parents walked with them on what should have been an ordinary family outing. Surveillance video captured the terrifying moment: the family crossing the street when the moped suddenly appeared, traveling against traffic. The passenger allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at least two shots.
One bullet slammed into little Kaori’s head. Her family initially thought the loud bangs were fireworks. Her brother jumped out of the stroller in fright, and her mother scooped him up. It was only moments later, after they rushed into a nearby deli for safety, that they realized the nightmare: their baby had been hit.
Video from inside the bodega shows the mother’s anguished screams as she discovered her daughter bleeding in the stroller. The baby’s father desperately rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead a short time later.
A mother’s raw agony: ‘She’s gone. She’s gone. She’s gone.’
In raw, tear-filled interviews, Lianna has poured out her grief while insisting the world remembers her daughter not just as “the baby” or “the victim,” but as Kaori — a happy, bubbly infant full of life.
“She was always laughing and smiling,” the young mother said. Kaori had just started saying “mama” and was beginning to take her first steps. The family had been looking forward to watching her grow, hitting all those precious milestones that every parent cherishes.
Now, Lianna is left answering impossible questions from her young son, who keeps asking where his baby sister is. “I don’t know what to tell him,” she said through sobs. “I gotta bury her now, and I can’t even hold my baby. I can’t hold her anymore. She’s gone. She’s gone. She’s gone.”
Kaori’s grandparents, both pastors, have spoken out with a mix of profound sorrow and remarkable grace. They told reporters they forgive those responsible but demanded they be taken off the streets so no other child suffers the same fate. “We forgive, but we don’t want this to happen to anyone else,” one grandparent said at a community vigil.
A growing memorial of teddy bears, flowers, candles and balloons has sprung up at the corner where the shooting happened. Neighbors, many clutching photos of the smiling baby, have gathered for vigils, praying and calling for an end to the senseless street violence plaguing parts of Brooklyn.
The suspects: Alleged gang associates and a moped getaway gone wrong
Police moved quickly. Amuri Greene, 21, was identified as the alleged shooter. He was thrown from the moped after the attack and taken to hospital, where he was placed under arrest. Greene faces multiple serious charges, including murder, attempted murder and assault.
In a recorded statement to police, Greene allegedly admitted he was aiming at Kaori’s father, claiming the dad was the intended target due to a gang dispute. Investigators say the father has associations with members of the Money Over Everything (MOE) gang based out of the Bushwick Houses. Greene is believed to be linked to a rival crew from the Marcy Houses.
The second suspect, Matthew Rodriguez, 18, was arrested days later in Pennsylvania. Police believe he was driving the moped. Charges against him are pending.
NYPD Chief of Detectives has confirmed the shooting appears gang-related, tied to ongoing tensions possibly sparked by social media or territorial beefs. The brazen daytime attack — firing from a moped in a residential area — has horrified residents who say children should be able to walk the streets safely with their parents.
A community demanding answers and action
East Williamsburg and nearby Bushwick have seen their share of violence, but the killing of a defenseless 7-month-old has struck a particularly raw nerve. Locals at vigils have clutched images of the suspects and pleaded for witnesses to come forward, with some bluntly saying “you gotta snitch” when babies are caught in the crossfire.
Mayor and NYPD officials visited the scene, condemning the violence and vowing to crack down on gangs. Community leaders have called for more resources to combat street crime, while frustrated residents point to broader issues of guns on the streets, broken families and a cycle of retaliation that too often ensnares the innocent.
Kaori’s family has emphasized that she was completely blameless — an adorable baby whose only “crime” was being in the wrong place at the wrong time with her father.
Her grandfather spoke movingly of the special bond he shared with the little girl who lived with them. Her grandmother broke down recalling the phone call at work: “Your granddaughter got shot in the head. Seven months.”
The father has also spoken out, reportedly writing a letter saying he had been trying to turn his life around for his children when this tragedy struck. He expressed his own devastation: “I want my baby back.”
The wider picture: Innocent lives lost to gang wars
This isn’t the first time stray bullets from gang disputes have claimed young lives in New York City, but the image of a tiny baby in a stroller being gunned down in broad daylight has amplified calls for tougher action against violent street crews.
Critics argue that lenient policies, revolving-door justice and the easy flow of illegal guns have emboldened gangs. Others point to the human cost of feuds that spill into public spaces where families simply try to go about their daily lives.
At vigils, speakers have demanded more police presence, better community programs for at-risk youth, and accountability for those who bring violence into neighborhoods.
Kaori’s mother has tried to set the record straight in interviews, pushing back against any narrative that minimizes her daughter’s loss or shifts blame. She wants the focus squarely on the beautiful baby girl whose life was stolen far too soon.
Planning a funeral while memories linger
As the legal process moves forward — with Greene arraigned and Rodriguez in custody — the family is preparing to say their final goodbyes. A funeral for Kaori is being arranged, a somber event no parent should ever have to organize for their infant child.
Lianna has spoken of the everyday moments she will never share again: feeding her daughter a bottle in the morning, dressing her in cute outfits, watching her learn and grow. The empty space in the double stroller. The silence where laughter and “mama” once filled the home.
Her young son continues to ask for his sister, a heartbreaking reminder of the ripple effects of one act of violence.
The grandparents, drawing on their faith as pastors, have offered forgiveness but stressed the need for justice and prevention. “We forgive them, but they need to be off the streets,” they said, echoing a common plea at the vigils.
Community members have left heartfelt messages at the memorial: “Rest in peace sweet Kaori,” “No more babies,” “Enough is enough.”
A city grapples with yet another innocent victim
New York City has made strides in reducing overall crime in recent years, but incidents like this — where gang retaliation claims the life of a baby — expose the persistent dangers in certain pockets of the city.
Police are reviewing extensive surveillance footage and urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward has been offered in the manhunt phases, though both suspects are now in custody.
For Lianna and her family, the arrests bring a measure of accountability but no real comfort. Nothing can bring Kaori back.
In her most emotional moments, the young mother has repeated the simple, devastating truth: “I can’t get her back.”
As Brooklyn mourns, many are asking how many more children must be lost before the cycle of gang violence is truly broken. Kaori Patterson-Moore — a smiling 7-month-old who had just started saying “mama” — deserved to grow up safe and loved. Instead, her short life ended in a hail of bullets meant for someone else.
Her family, supported by a grieving community, now faces a future without her. They ask only that the world remembers her name and fights so no other mother has to say those same words: “She’s gone. She’s gone. She’s gone.”
