A young California girl who was kidnapped in 2020 when she was just 5 years old has been found safe, about 2,700 miles from home in North Carolina.
The girl, identified as Karen Rojas by the organization Missing People in America, was reported missing from Duarte, about 20 miles east of Los Angeles, on July 1, 2020.
Los Angeles County’s Department of Family Services had an ongoing investigation involving the child at the time she went missing, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
“According to authorities, the child’s mother — who had custody — stopped communicating with DCFS personnel and was believed to have taken the child,” authorities said.
Last Friday, detectives received information that the child could be in Washington County, North Carolina, about 135 miles from Raleigh, and approximately 2,700 miles from Southern California.

An investigation revealed that Rojas, now 11 years old, was enrolled at a local school in North Carolina “under an alias name,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.
“After working in combination with multiple agencies from NC to California, the child was taken into protective custody, and is SAFE!” authorities said.
“These are very rare occurrences to have such a positive outcome on such an old case as this, but it reminds us that through hard work, and dedication, and cooperation. Stories with positive outcomes like these can happen,” the sheriff’s office added.
No arrests were announced in the case.
Due to the child’s age and ongoing investigations, authorities will not be providing any additional information, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department says it will continue to work with the Department of Family Services and authorities in North Carolina on its investigation.

Jason Miller slapped me so hard in front of our entire homeroom that my pink Stanley cup rolled under Brianna’s desk. And the worst part? He didn’t look sorry until he saw everyone staring. My husband broke my leg because I slapped his mistress. Then he locked me in the basement and told his staff, “No food. No water. Let her learn what happens when she forgets who pays for this house.” He forgot one thing. This house was never paid for by him. PART 1: THE SHOES BY […]

My brother thought he could beat me at 2:19 a.m. and still eat breakfast in the same kitchen like a king. He forgot one thing. Morning has witnesses. I came home from my shift at 2:19 on a Saturday morning, still wearing navy scrubs that smelled like sanitizer, stale coffee, and the kind of exhaustion […]

Part 2 Vanessa did not run, did not scream, and did not storm outside to confront Daniel while he was still smiling into his phone. tt_What my husband served her at Sunday dinner left her without words.
At 12:03 on a Thursday, my phone rang while I was answering emails at the kitchen table. Lily was asleep under a blanket in the living room, the house was quiet, and for one stupid second I almost let the call go to voicemail because I thought it was spam. Then I saw the school’s […]

Part 2 The walk to the podium felt longer than any hallway I had ever crossed in my life. Every step carried the weight of my mother’s tired hands, her quiet tears, her unpaid bills, her whispered prayers over me when she thought I was asleep. By the time I reached the stage, the applause […]
