“Total surprise and shock.” That’s how one neighbor described the moment a quiet, gated Florida community learned something unthinkable had happened behind closed doors.
From the outside, the home looked like any other in the quiet Lakewood Ranch community, with manicured lawns, gated security, and nothing to suggest distress.
But a routine welfare check at the luxury residence would soon uncover a tragedy few saw coming.

The Welfare Check That Changed Everything
Behind the gates of one of the area’s most exclusive neighborhoods, deputies encountered a scene they would later describe as “violent” and heartbreaking.
According to the New York Post, deputies were called to the family’s million-dollar residence in The Lake Club after a concerned husband and father, Richard James, requested help.

He had been traveling in South America and had not heard from his family in at least a day and a half. When authorities arrived at the $1.7 million home around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2026, they immediately sensed something was terribly wrong.
“Right away, you could tell something wasn’t right,” Manatee County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Randy Warren told the New York Post. Those chilling words would only begin to hint at the devastating discovery waiting inside the luxury Florida home.
Once at the home, deputies said they “observed circumstances that prompted them to enter the residence.” The sheriff’s office did not share what these circumstances were, but described the scene as “violent.”
What they found inside stunned even seasoned law enforcement officers and confirmed the community’s worst fears.
The Heartbreaking Discovery Inside the Home
Inside the home, deputies made a devastating discovery. Deputies found Monika Rubacha, 44, along with her son, Josh James, 14, and daughter, Emma James, 11, dead in separate rooms.
All three had suffered traumatic injuries, according to reporting from ABC 7 News. Detectives said the children were found in different bedrooms, while their mother was located in another area of the house.
“This is a violent scene,” Warren said, describing what deputies encountered. “This is a horrible thing.” Investigators believe Rubacha killed her two children before taking her own life.

Yet a photo from May 2018 shows the family earlier appearing picture-perfect. In a golden-hour portrait shared online, the family stands close together beneath softly lit trees.
Rubacha smiles gently at the camera while holding her pink-dressed daughter, as her husband rests a protective arm around her shoulders. Their son leans into his parents with a wide grin, completing what appears to be an effortlessly happy family moment.
One commenter once wrote, “Wow! You look like a picture perfect family… love the photos.”
Now, that remark feels especially haunting.
