As Olympic figure skating champion Alysa Liu basks in her historic gold medal glory at Milano Cortina 2026, spotlighting her extraordinary journey, fresh attention is turning to her unconventional family origins. Her father, Arthur Liu — a single dad by choice, political refugee from China, and dedicated immigration lawyer — openly shared years ago how he built his family through surrogacy and anonymous egg donors.

In interviews dating back to 2019 (including with Sports Illustrated and others), Arthur revealed he chose Caucasian egg donors intentionally, believing his children would thrive from a “diverse gene pool” and multicultural upbringing. He welcomed all five kids — Alysa (the eldest), sister Selina, and the triplets Julia, Justin, and Joshua — using two surrogate mothers and his own sperm via IVF. Alysa shares the same surrogate as the triplets, and she’s even met her.Arthur, who fled China after the Tiananmen Square protests and started his family at age 40 because he “always wanted kids,” raised them as a single parent with help from his mother and friends. When young Alysa once asked why she didn’t “look Chinese,” he explained the truth openly — a moment of honesty that shaped their close bond. This non-traditional path, far from hidden, highlights a story of intentional love, resilience, and choice — now amplified as the world celebrates Alysa’s triumph.
