The snowboarder was due to compete in his fourth Olympics but crashed during the cross event training on Monday.

The veteran felt more pain in his neck after waking up on Tuesday morning.

Bolton, 35, was taken for further tests and scans which revealed that he has sustained two fractures in his neck.

As a result, he was taken away from the mountain by helicopter for further treatment.

Bolton was accompanied on the journey by an official from the Australian team.

Team chef de mission Alisa Camplin has insisted that the star is being cared for and has been joined by his wife.

She said: “Cam wanted to make sure his team-mates understood what was happening and that he was fine and doing well and being looked after well.

“He knows how seriously we’re taking the process of support around him and the communication has been really good.

“I’m proud of the level of care.”

The Australians have already been rocked by injury in Milano Cortina, with three other stars taking blows.

Aerials medal hopeful Laura Peel hurt her knee in the training camp ahead of the games.

Snowboarder Misaka Vaughan was ruled out after hitting her head during training and freeskier Daisy Thomas injured her knee in a fall.

Camplin added: “Unfortunately with winter sport injuries happen along the way.

“In 53 athletes doing relatively high-risk sports it’s not something that’s unusual, I’m afraid to say.

“My heart breaks on their behalf – I know how much work goes into an Olympic dream.”

Bolton had previously competed in the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics for Australia.
